Gas Pressure

Learning Objective: Explain how pressure effects gases .

STARTER!!
Racing-car tyres reach 100°C. Before a race, technicians
pump tyres to a lower pressure than they need in the
race….why do you think so?
RECALL: States of Matter
This cannot be compressed but
can flow and they have no fixed
LIQUID shape.

This don’t flow and

GAS cannot be compressed.

SOLID This can be compressed and

can flow.
RECALL 2: What is the state?

1. Mercury at 120°c Liquid

2. Aluminium at 2364°c Liquid

3. Salt at 963°c solid

4. Oxygen at -196°c Liquid

5. Water at 100°c

6. Chlorine at 0°c gas

NOW: Why do balloons get bigger as you blow them up?

When you blow up a balloon, you are filling it with air particles. The
more air particles you add, the bigger the balloon.
What is gas pressure?
Inside the balloon, the air particles move quickly from place to place.
They bump into, or collide with, each other. They also collide with the rubber the
balloon is made from. The collisions exert a force on the rubber. The force is the
gas pressure.
Q1. State what is meant by gas
pressure.
Q2. Explain how the air particles
cause gas pressure inside the
balloon.
CHALLENGE: How does the
number of particles affect
pressure?

Gas particles always exert pressure on the walls of

their container. Whatever the container is made from.
How does the number of particles affect
pressure?
Rubber is stretchy. So when Adding more particles causes
you blow more particles into a more frequent collisions with
balloon, the balloon expands. the walls of the balloon.
Therefore, the pressure inside
the balloon increases.

Q – Explain why blowing more

air into the balloon increases
the pressure inside it.
Collapsing Can
Method
1. Add a small amount of water to the
bottom of a can.
2. Heat the can until steam is coming out
from the top.
3. With tongs grab the can and tip it
upside down into a glass trough of cold
water.
• Heating the can turns the water into s_______ which increases the pressure
inside/outside the can.
• When the can is placed in cold water the water vapour quickly c_________ back to
liquid water.
• This quickly reduces the pressure inside/outside the can compared to the inside/outside.
• The pressure of the outside is greater/less than the pressure on the inside of the can
so it crushes it.
• Heating the can turns the water into steam which increases the pressure inside the can.
• When the can is placed in cold water the water vapour quickly condenses back to liquid
water.
• This quickly reduces the pressure inside the can compared to the outside.
• The pressure of the outside is greater than the pressure on the inside of the can so it
crushes it.
What factors affect gas pressure?
Gas pressure is affected by two factors…

1. The number of particles

2. The temperature
The higher you go up a mountain the less pressure there is.
Why is this?
Up a mountain

• The number of particles decreases

up the mountain.
• Therefore, the force exerted on
you decreases.
Ground Level
• Resulting in less pressure.
Why do balloons deflate over time?
A balloon with high pressure has lots of higher amount
particles inside that are colliding with the
walls of the balloon keeping it inflated. of particles
