The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many organizations to follow a ‘hybrid’ method of
working an learning.
What does hybrid learning mean?
Hybrid learning - students learning through a mix of in-person and online instruction and
activities.

Hybrid INCLUSIVE education is a new approach to inclusion.

Can you think of some advantages and challenges of hybrid inclusive education?

Hybridity

• Hybridity is not a new concept, but it is gaining importance as an

approach in education today (Gutiérrez, Baquedano‐López &
Tejeda, 1999).
• Transforming the teaching and learning paradigm
– Hybrid = mixture
– Inclusive education = catering for learning needs of all learners
• De la Varre, Keane and Irvin (2011, p. 37) confirm that “Online
learning has the potential to be transformative on many levels.”

How to implement hybrid inclusive education?

• Teacher preparation is very important in the creation of a hybrid learning

space.
• This may imply that teachers must develop a hybrid curriculum that
accommodates the learning needs of all learners and “…bridge the gap
between both theory and practice and on-campus and off campus
learning” (Cremers, Wals, Wesselink & Mulder, 2016, p. 310).
• Support is essential.

• Modify the curriculum to accommodate diverse needs AND
maintain high academic standards.
• Flexibility in teaching methods, instructional materials and
assessment strategies to accommodate needs.
• Differentiated instruction and support to ensure access and
engagement with the curriculum.
Teacher Training and Professional Development
• Provide training and development opportunities to enhance
skills in HIE. Provide training on:
– Inclusive practices
– Understanding diverse needs
– Adapting instruction
– Utilising assistive technologies
Collaboration and Partnerships
• Support HIE by fostering partnerships and collaboration among
schools, educators, parents, and community stakeholders.
• Regular communication and collaboration for support services.

educators can share experiences, resources, and strategies for
hybrid inclusive education.
Access and Equity
• Access to quality education for ALL learners.
• Identify and address barriers that hinder full participation of HIE.
• Implement REASONABLE accommodations, assistive technologies,
and support services to facilitate inclusion and success.
Monitoring and evaluation
• Establish ways of monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of HIE
initiatives.
• Analyse outcomes, satisfaction and participation for improvements
and decision-making.
• Regularly assess the inclusiveness of the learning environment,
curriculum, and support services, making adjustments as needed.
