PERFORMANCE

One important issue in networking is the

performance of the network—how good it is ?
Four parameters are used to measure the performance
of the network.
1. Bandwidth 2. Throughput 3. Latency 4.Jitter
Bandwidth
Throughput
Latency(Delay)
 The latency and delay defines that how long it
takes to receive the complete message to the
Destination(Receiver) point from the time of
first bit sent out from the source (sender).

 Latency = Propagation time + Transmission time

+ Queuing time + Processing delay

Propagation Time :
 Propagation time measures the time required for

a bit to travel from the source to the

destination

Propagation time(delay) = Distance/Propagation

speed
Transmission Time
 The time required for transmission of a
message depends on the size of the message
and the bandwidth of the channel

 Transmission time(delay) = Message

size/bandwidth(bps)
Queuing Time

 The time needed for each device can hold the message
before it can be processed.

 Ex: Routers or any intermediate node.

 If the traffic is more then the queuing delay for

message is more.
Jitter

Jitter refers to the variation in the packet arrival time.
