Newton’s First Law of Motion:
Law of Inertia

An object at rest remains at rest or an object

in motion remains in motion at constant
speed and in a straight line unless acted
upon by a net force
“Inertia is tendency of an object
to resist any change in motion”

“The greater the mass of an object,

the greater its inertia.”
Newton’s First Law of Motion

 Objects – whether they are staying still or moving –

tend to keep on doing what they’re doing until
something interferes.

 When we put something down, it tends to stay in that

spot until someone or something moves it.
Examples of Newton’s Law of Inertia

 1. Car suddenly stops and

you strain against the
seat belt
 2. Car turns left and you
appear to slide to the
right
 3. The difficulty of pushing
a car that won’t start
Examples of Law of Inertia
Wear your seat belt! Don’t let this be
you!
If you are traveling 70 mph and the car
suddenly stops, your body will remain
traveling 70 mph.

 How does a moving object stay in motion???

 Can you picture an object moving forever since objects
always seem to slow down at some point???
 Why do objects slow down???
