FORCE IS......
A force is a PUSH OR A PULL that
causes an object to move, STOP,
change direction, SPEED up, or
slow down. It is measured in units
called NEWTONS (N) after Sir
Isaac Newton.

MOTION IS......
Motion is the change of an object’s
POSITION over a period of time.
It is described in terms of
position, direction, and speed. of
time. It is described in terms of
position, direction, and speed.

FORCE AND MOTION

Newton's first law of motion states that an
object at rest remains at rest and an object in

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW

motion remains in motion with the same
velocity unless acted upon by what we call
an unbalanced force. Let's break this law
down by defining some key terms.

Unbalanced Balanced
VELOCITY Forced Forced
Speed of an External force When an object is
object in a that changes the at rest or moving

direction.. object. velocity.

Consider a car moving

a constant velocity of 65 Friction is a force

witnessed, however, the
car slows down, and it
comes to rest. This
observation begs the
question: what external
forces act on the car to
stop its motion?

First Law
THE LAW OF
INERTIA
• An object will remain at REST
(or in STRAIGHT line at a
constant speed) unless an
outside force acts upon it.
Basically, objects do not
change motion unless they are
FORCED to. This is known as
INERTIA. This is why you
move forward in a car when it
suddenly stops (and should
always wear your SEATBELT!).

WHAT IS
YOUR
RESULT? Objects will maintain their
original state, if it’s not acted
upon by a force. So it is proven
that objects have the nature of
inertia.
