ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION

CARDIOPULMONARY
RESUSCITATION
ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION
• Artificial Respiration (AR)- is a way of breathing to a
person’s lungs when normal breathing ceased or stop to
function.

• Respiratory Arrest – a condition when the respiration or

breathing pattern of an individual stop to function while
the pulse and circulation may continue.

Causes:
Choking, electrocution, strangulation, drowning,
suffocation
ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION
Methods:
- Mouth to mouth - Mouth to
nose
-Mouth to stoma -Mouth to
mouth and
nose
- Mouth to barrier device

CPR Basics

Can you save a life? In an emergency,

when every second is critical, would you
know what to do?
CARDIOPULMONARY
RESUSCITATION

CPR TIME LINE

0-4 mins. brain

damage unlikely
4-6 mins. brain
damage possible
6-10 mins. brain
damage probable
over 10 mins.
probable brain
death
How CPR works?

Cardio (heart)
Pulmonary (lung)
Resuscitation
(revive, revitalize)
serves as an
artificial heartbeat
and an artificial
respirator.
When to Activate Medical
Assistance
• ACTIVATE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE may be the
most important step you can take to save a
life.
• If someone besides you is present, they should
ACTIVATE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE immediately.
If you’re alone with the victim, try to call for
help prior to starting CPR on an adult and
after a minute on a child.
When to Activate Medical Assistance
• what not to do:

DO NOT leave the victim alone.

DO NOT try make the victim drink water.
DO NOT throw water on the victim's face.
DO NOT prompt the victim into a sitting
position.
DO NOT try to revive the victim by slapping
his face.
Activating Medical Assistance
• Provide operator with:

1. Your location
2. Your phone number
3. Type of emergency
4. Victim's condition
ADULT CPR

American Heart Association's

guidelines dictate that Adult CPR is
performed on any person over the age
of 8.
Airway

1. Tilt head
Airway

2. Open airway
Breathing

1. Give two breaths

Breathing

2. Let victim exhale

Circulation

1. Check the Carotid artery

Circulation

2. Locate sternum
Circulation

3. Proper hand placement

Circulation

If there is no pulse,
continue performing
30 compressions/2
breaths, checking for
pulse after every 5
cycles until help
arrives.

4. Two hands, two inches

CHILD CPR
American Heart Association's
guidelines dictate that Adult CPR is
performed on any victim under the
age of 8.

in children cardiac arrest is rarely caused by heart

failure but rather by an injury such as poisoning,
smoke inhalation, or head trauma, which causes
the breathing to stop first.

And since children are more resilient than adults

statistics have shown that they tend to respond to
CPR much better if administered as soon as
possible.
Airway

1. Look, listen, and feel for breaths

Child CPR- Airway

pinch his nose with your fingertips or cover his mouth and nose
with your mouth creating a tight seal, and give two breaths
Child CPR- Circulation

Check the Carotid artery

Child CPR - Circulation

. Proper hand placement

INFANT CPR
American Heart Association's
guidelines dictate that Adult CPR is
performed on any victim under the
age of 12 months.

Check the infant for responsiveness by

patting his feet and gently tapping his
chest or shoulders.
Infant CPR - Airway

. "Sniffer's position”
Infant CPR - Breathing

Puff from the cheeks

Infant CPR - Circulation

Check the Brachial artery
