Past simple & past continuous

Past simple en past continuous komen regelmatig voor in dezelfde zin. Eén van de twee was al
bezig:

We saw that the chimpanzees were playing with each other.

She was doing the dishes when the phone rang.

Als er twee dingen tegelijk bezig waren (parallel actions), gebruik je twee keer de past continuous.

Tim was doing the dishes while Tom was watching TV.

Als er twee (of meer) dingen na elkaar gebeurden, gebruik je twee (of meer) keer de past simple.

The thief threatened him with a knife, took his wallet and ran away.
