PARTS OF

THE
COMPOUND LIGHT
MICROSCOPE
At the end of the discussion, you should be able
to;
Ø define Microscope,
Ø state the function of a microscope,
Ø explain the history of microscope,
Ø Identify the three types of microscopes, along with
their corresponding functions and;
Ø State the importance of microscope in the field of
scientific research.
Resolution
- The eye's ability to see things clearly and pick up on
small details.
WE SHOULD MAKE THINGS APPEAR LARGER.
Microscopes
-Is an optical instrument used for viewing very
small objects.
- The term microscope comes from the Greek
words for small and to view.
- Microscope use "magnification" in order to
make small objects or microorganisms appear
larger.
How does people come up with
Microscope?
HISTORY
OF
MICROSCOPE
During 1st century, ancient Romans discovered
lenses and in 13th century they make use of
these lenses to make spectacles.
• In 1590, Zacharias Janssen and his
Father, Hans. Had invented the first
microscope.
• The microscope consisted of two
lenses.
• While in the mid-1670s, Antonie Van
Leeuwenhoek. Made improvements
to the existing microscope.

• With his microscope, it can now
magnify objects up to 200x
bigger.
• He is the first person to observed
things that no one had ever seen
before.
• Microorganisms that are not visible to our
human eyes. He called this organisms
"animalcules."
• Father of microbiology (Study of
microorganisms).
In modern times, people have developed various
types of microscopes.

PROS • Can view live specimens • HIGH • PROVIDES 3D IMAGE

• Simple and Cheap MAGNIFICATION • GOOD FOR SURFACES
• VERY GOOD • SPECIMEN DO NOT NEED
RESOLUTION TO BE STAINED OR IN
• GOOD FOR THIN SECTIONS
ORGANELLES AND
PROKARYOTES
CONS • Poor Resolution (200 • live specimen cannot • Resolution is not as good
nm) be used as TEM
• Specimens must be • Needs very sections • internal structure cannot be
stained of the spicemen seen
• Oragenelles cannot be • specimen must be • Very expensive
seen stained
• Image producedis not
colored
• very expensve
Let us try to answer this first.
1. What is the name of the optical instrument used for viewing
very small objects?
2. Who are the two individuals credited with the invention of
the microscope?
3. What is the approximate magnification capability of the
transmission electron microscope?
4. Which type of microscope uses electrons as a source of
illumination?
5. Can a scanning electron microscope be used to study live
organisms, dead organisms, or both?
Direction: Using your understanding from our lesson,
please compare and contrast the three types of
microscopes: Compound Microscope, Transmission
Electron Microscope, and Scanning Electron Microscope.
