Introduction to Finnish Language
• Finnish is the first official language of Finland. The second
official language is Swedish (ruotsi).

• Finnish has approximately five million speakers and a variety of


dialects and registers.

• The Finnish language is a member of the Finno-Ugrian language


family like Estonian (viro), Hungarian (unkari) and indigenous
Sami (saame) languages.

• The structure and vocabulary of Finnish differ greatly from other


languages spoken in Europe e.g. Indo-European languages.
However, Finnish today also shares a lot of semantics and
vocabulary with Western languages.
