Structural Functional Approach


• It is also called as social system theory, equilibrium theory.
• Herbert Spencer, Durkheim, Weber, Talcott Parsons, Merton, Davis.
• A society is seen as an organised network of cooperating groups operating in a
fairly ordered manner according to a set of rules and values shared by most
members.
• Society is seen as a stable system with a tendency toward equilibrium i.e., a
tendency to maintain a balanced, harmoniously operating system.

Conflict Approach
• Marx, C wright Mills, Lewis Coser, Chambliss
• Society are in a constant state of change, in which conflict is a
permanent feature.
• Conflict includes violence, competition, hostility, disagreement over
goals and values.
• The conflict theorists are interested to know how society’s institution
may help to maintain the privileges of some groups and keep others in
a subservient position.

Interactionist Approach
• Also known as symbolic interactionalism.
• Interested to understand society as a whole through an examination of
social interactions at the micro level social groups.
• This perspective generalises about fundamental or everyday forms of
everyday interaction.
• CH Cooley, Goffman, Blumer, Mead, Thomas

Feminist Approach
• Feminist perspective has much in common with conflict perspective.
• It analyses the status of women and men in society with the purpose of
using that knowledge to better women’s lives.
• It is more concerned with giving a voice to women and highlighting
the various ways women have contributed to society
