COBALAMIN (VITAMIN B 12)

Chemistry

vitaminB12, Vitamin B12 or Vitamin B-12, Also called cobalamin is a water soluble vaitamin with a key
role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system and for the formation of blood. It is one
of the eight B vitamins. jargm
It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, tedagay
Especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production
It is produced by anaerobic bacteria like (Streptomyces species) not by plants and animals. Ade ku
Vitamin B12 also called as anti-pernicious anaemia factor (APA-factor)
It should be used in the treatment of pernicious aneaemia. The co-enzyme form of vitaminB12 is known
as Biologic Grignard reagent

VITAMIN B12- Sources

Daily requirement (RDA)

3-4 μg/day.

Vitamin B12 - RDA

Vitamin Bl2 combines with intrinsic factor to
form Vitamin B12 - IF complex.

Vitamin B12 intrinsic factor complex is

absorbed in the ileum.

In the illeal cells the intrinsic factor is

released and the B12 is transferred to a
plasma transport protein transcobalamin II.

ABSORPTION AND TRANSPORT

Whole liver contains
vitamin B12 is stored
about 2mg of B12,
in the liver and
which is sufficient
other tissues
for 2-3 years.

B12- STORAGE

Methyl cobalamin

Deoxy adenosylcobalamin

VITAMIN B12 ACTIVE FORM

Vitamin B12 Active form
Vitamin B12 act as coenzyme.
Methyl cobalamin is the coenzyme of methionine synthase .
Deoxy adenosylcobalamin is the coenzyme of methyl malonyl-CoA
mutase
