CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN BRIEF (1/2)

Recycling Alone is Not Circular Economy

 Recycling Begins After Useful Life is Over or Processes Finish

 Circular Economy Starts from the Beginning to Stop Waste & Pollution

Recycling is IMPORTANT but Not ENOUGH

Need to Design Out Possibilities of Waste Generation

Zero Waste

Designs that Ensure:

Re - assembly
- use

CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN BRIEF (2/2)

Concept of Use & Throw is Not as per CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Disposable Industrial Ingredients:

 Biodegradable such as Organic Materials, Paper, Fabric, etc

 Metal & Plastic Waste - Recyclable & Reusable

All Ingredients – Reusable or to be Put Back in NATURE

Consumers to Give Back After End of Life & Manufacturers to Take Back
 Stress on Renting, Sharing or Leasing
 Consumers are Users Not Consumers

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY & CIRCULAR ECONOMY (2/2)

100 BILLION TONNES OF MATERIALS & RESOURCES ENTERED GLOBAL ECONOMY

A IN 2017 TO PRODUCE FOOD, MAKE CLOTHES & PHONES ETC., GENERATE
ELECTRICITY, BUILD HOMES AND THIS IS EXPECTED TO DOUBLE BY 2060.

B ABOUT 1/3RD OF THIS IS GOING TO LAND FILLS, OCEANS ETC AND ONLY
8.6% RECYCLED

As per a Study by
Cleanway’s Center C WORLD IS USING MORE RESOURCES THAN WHAT CAN BE

BENEFITS OF NEW NORMS

Reduced Pressure on Economic Growth & Job Circular Economy in India

Environment Creation could be worth $40-45

As per another report by Estimate for India would

KPMG(2020), roughly $23 easily be around $ 250-300

ANTICIPATED DIFFICULTIES

All materials are not

recyclable- EU’S
instructions on Circular
Lack of Economy sets a long term
directive of only 70%
Strategic Guidelines recycling.
& Standardization
Mercury, Asbestos, Paper
only up to certain number of
cycles are recyclable

NOW OUR EXCELLENT INITIATIVE IN HAZIRA… 8

AMNS HAS A 9.6 MMTPA STEEL PLANT IN HAZIRA
Overall, View of Slag Generation in India
Around 18.5 MMTPA of steel slag
01
is generated in India
National steel policy 2017 envisages the
02 crude steel production in the country will
be nearly 300 MMTPA by 2030-31
Accordingly, steel slag production is
also likely to increase to 03
45 MMTPA by 2030-31
Disposal of steel slag is a major
04 concern for steel industries as it
Processed steel slag aggregate is considered as a waste material
exhibit great potential as a substitute
of natural aggregate in road 05
construction & has a potential for use
as Rail Ballast Demand of natural aggregate for road
06 construction in the country is around 1.1
billion tonnes per annum
This demand is slated to increase
by 2 billion tons by the end of 2030 07

OUR INNOVATIVE APPROACH
In Hazira Plant AMNS
processes its slag and This useful material is All layers of bituminous
converts into a useful being given to road pavement, sub-
resource for layers as a branded grade, sub-base, base
construction of sturdy product called course and bituminous
roads as a substitute SLAGREGATE with layers are constructed
for the natural stone guaranteed quality This road connects using steel slag
aggregate standards NH 6 to Hazira Port aggregates

12
IMPORTANT FINDINGS (1/2)

Processed EAF steel slag aggregates has been utilized as 100%

substitute of natural aggregates in all layers of bituminous
pavement including median and shoulder portion

Load carrying capacity of steel slag road is found better than the
road built through natural aggregates

Riding quality parameters of steel slag road is at par with the road
built through natural aggregates while steel slag road is
exhibiting better skid resistance under wet condition

Overall bituminous pavement thickness can be reduced by 30 to

40 % by using processed steel slag materials in all pavement
layers

Use of processed steel slag aggregates and reduced pavement

thickness will render the steel slag road approximately 30 to 40
% cheaper than road built through natural aggregates

13
IMPORTANT FINDINGS (2/2)

This process is also expected to reduce GHG emissions and

carbon footprint in road construction activity and is in line with
India’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goal No. 9 for building resilient infrastructure
through inclusive and sustainable industrialization and green
technologies

Use of otherwise waste by-product as a substitute of naturally

occurring stone aggregate is in line with the philosophy of
sustainability and promotes Circular Economy
