What are water

ecosystems?
Water ecosystems differ in
1.The kind of water they have
2.How fast it moves
3.How deep it is
Rivers
• Fish like: Pike, bullhead, and
bass.
• Animals like: crayfish, otters,
ducks, turtles, and insects.
Rivers
• Different kinds of rivers have different kinds of organisms.
• Few organisms of any kind can live in badly polluted waters.
• Water ecosystems include animals that spend much of their
time on land.
• Those animals need structures that allow them to do well in
both environments.
• River otter has streamlined body helps it swim easily and
catch fish and it can close its ears and nose will it swim.
• On land it can run and catch small mammals and frogs.
Wetlands

• It is partly covered with water, or is flooded at least part of each year.

• So many of the plants and animals of wetlands are found on land and in water.
• The plant, soil, and microorganisms of wetlands often act as filters, cleaning the water
that flows through a wetland. This helps all organisms live there.

Coral Reefs

• Coral reefs like busy cities in the oceans. So many

organisms live there.
• Eels, jellyfish, sharks, crabs, clownfish, and clams.
Coral Reefs
• Coral reefs are warm shallow waters. (about 18°C
or above)
• Corals are animals have special relationship with
algae.
• Algae help the coral grow and build its skeleton.
• Most algae grow in shallow warm water (Some
algae carry on photosynthesis).
• If the water is so deep, algae grow inside the
coral.
Coral Reefs
• When coral die, the hard skeleton parts pile up to
make the reef.
• The nooks and crannies of the reef are homes for
many kinds of plants and animals.
• Extra nutrients in the water harm a coral reef,
because it helps coral’s enemies grow.

• Coral reefs often protect shore lines from ocean

storms
• The organisms there have provided new kinds of
medicines.
The deep sea
• The deep sea is dark, cold, and have very high pressure.
• No plants can grow.
• Many animals there eat dead plants and animals that sink
from higher levels.
• Some places called deep-sea vents have bacteria make
food form the chemicals in the water.
• These bacteria are then eaten by bigger animals.
The deep sea
• In very deep high pressure areas the animals bodies are
adapted for living under this crushing pressure.
• Some have special organs make the fish glow in the dark
