 What is news? (Ano nga ba ang balita?)
News is a timely and factual narration of past, present,
and future events.

Ang balita ay ang napapanahon at makatotohanang

impormasyon tungkol sa mga nangyari, nangyayari, at
mangyayari.
 Characteristics of a news
• News must be timely
Dapat napapanahon ang balita
• News must be factual and accurate
Dapat tama at makatotohanan ang balita
• News must not be biased
Dapat walang pinapanigan ang balita
• News must be significant

 2 types of news
• Hard News
Uses the SUMMARY LEAD. This concerns
issues, politics, economics, international relations,
welfare, and scientific developments.
• Soft News
A news written in the style of a feature article. This
focuses on human-interest stories and celebrities.
Topics include entertainment, celebrity, and lifestyle
news.

 Lead
• The Lead is the first paragraph of the news and is
considered to be its most important part.
• The lead answers the five W’s and one H
effectively
Types of lead
• SUMMARY LEAD – answers the 5W’s and H questions and is
presented in an inverted pyramid form.

• NOVELTY LEAD – attracts the reader’s attention, makes them

curious, and sustains their interests.
Types of SUMMARY lead
• What lead [ano?] – used if the most important part angle of the news
is the event. Ginagamit kapag ang pangyayari ang
pinakamahalagang bahagi ng balita.

• Who lead [sino?] – used if a person or an organization is more

important than the event. Ginagamit kapag ang tao o ang
organisasyon ay mas mahalaga kaysa sa pangyayari.
Types of SUMMARY lead
• Where lead – used if the location of the event takes place is the
most important part of the news. Ginagamit ito kapag ang
lugar ang pinakamahalagang bahagi ng balita.

• When Lead – this lead isn’t used that much. It is only used if the
time is the most important part of the news. Hindi ito madalas
nagagamit at ginagamit lamang ito kapag ang oras o araw ng
pangyayari ay ang pinakamahalagang parte ng balita.
Types of lead
• WHY lead – used if the cause of the news is the most important
part of the news. Ginagamit ito kapag ang pinakamahalagang
bahagi ng balita ay ang dahilan ng balita.

• HOW LEAD – used if the process of the event is the most

important part of the news. Ginagamit ito kapag ang
pinakamahalagang bahagi ng balita ay ang proseso ng mga
pangyayari.

• Direct Quote - is the exact words taken from an original source and
used in a second piece of writing.
Example: Mom said, “Always brush your teeth before bed.”

• Indirect Quote - the idea or fact taken from an outside source and
used in a second piece of writing.
Example: Mom said that I should always brush my teeth before
bed.

Words, Phrases, Clauses, Sentences, or Paragraphs that leads the
readers from one idea or fact to the next

ICC can now issue arrest warrants over drug

MANILA, Philippines — The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court can now apply for the
issuance of arrest warrants at the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber.
The Philippine government has said it will not implement any arrest warrant from the ICC.
“At this stage, the prosecutor can actually already decide who he might charge with crimes against
humanity, which is what the original request to be allowed to investigate was meant to do,” International
Center for Transitional Justice senior expert Ruben Carranza said yesterday in an interview on ANC.
But Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla said on July 17 that the government will not execute arrest
warrants that the ICC may issue.
“They have nothing to do here. What will they do? Invade us? Do they want to invade us like a
colony again?” he said.
ICC judges can issue warrants of arrest – or alternatively, a summons – to ensure that persons
appear at trial and do not obstruct or endanger the investigation or court proceedings, or prevent persons
from continuing with the commission of a crime.
Tips in news writing
• Use strong, active verbs. Avoid passive voice.
Subject + Verb + Object
• Do not use abbreviations unfamiliar to the
reader. Do this instead:

• Abbreviate long months (Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct.,
Nov., and Dec.) when part of a date while spell out
short ones. Example:
Feb. 10, 2013 March 02, 2023
• Write in third person:
I created this. The man created this.
We are a team. They are a team.
• Use 8 p.m. instead of 8:00 p.m. and use P7
instead of P7.00:
He fell asleep at 8:00 p.m. He fell asleep at 8 p.m.
• Use time-date-place (TDP) pattern
The event will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday,
July 22, 2023 at Kids’ Nest School Inc.
• Capitalize titles if used before the name but not if
after.

• Capitalize titles of books, articles, television shows,
albums, and other compositions.

• Spell out numbers below 10 while use figures for 10 and
above.
