ACTIVITY

The SSG of Cabayog City National High School launches a

recycling campaign of waste materials in order to raise students‟
awareness of environmental protection and the effects of climate
change. This is in connection with the celebration of Earth Month.
Every kilogram of waste
materials earns points that
can be exchanged for school
supplies. Paper, which is the
number one waste collected,
earns 6 points for every kilo.
a. What happens to the number of points when the number of kilograms of
paper is doubled?
b. How many kilograms of papers will the Grade 9 Abokado class have in
order to raise 600 points?
c. What mathematical statement will relate the two quantities involved?
d. In what way are you able to help clean the environment by collecting
these papers? What items can be made out of these papers?
What did you notice with the
two quantities? Is there a direct
relationship between the two
quantities?
DIRECT VARIATION
Important Things to Remember:
 There
is direct variation whenever a situation produces pairs of
numbers in which their ratio is constant.
The statements:
“y varies directly as x”
“y is directly proportional to x” and
“y is proportional to x”

may be translated mathematically as y = kx,

where k is the constant of variation.
Important Things to Remember:
Which of the following equations is of the
form y = kx and shows a direct
relationship?

1. y = 2x + 3
2. y = 3x
3. y = 5x
4. y = x2 – 4
5. y = 4x2
Examples:
1. If y varies directly as x and y = 24 when x = 6, find the
variation constant and the equation of variation.
Solution:
a. Express the statement “y varies directly as x”
b. Solve for k by substituting the given values in the
equation.
c. Form the equation of the variation by
substituting the value of k.

Answer: y = 4x
Examples:
2. The table below shows the distance d varies directly as the time t. Find the
constant of the variation and the equation which describes the relation.

Time (hr) 1 2 3 4 5
Distance (km) 10 20 30 40 50
Solution:
a. Express the statement “d varies directly as the time t”
b. Use one of the pairs of values then substitute the values of d
and t, and solve for k.

Answer: d = 10t
Activity 6: It’s Your Turn!

destination. F = kd
2. The cost C of fish varies directly as its weight w in kilograms.

3. An employee’s salary S varies
S =directly
kd as the number of days d he has
worked.
4. The areaAA=ofks²

5. The distance D travelled by a car varies directly as its speed s.
D = ks
Activity 6: It’s Your Turn!
A. Write an equation for the following statements:
6. The length L of a person’s shadow at a given time varies directly as the
height h of the person. L = kh
7. The cost of electricity C varies directly as the number of kilowatt-hour
consumption l. C = kl
8. The volume V of a cylinder varies directly as its height h.
V = kh
9. The weight W of an object is directly proportional to its mass m.
10. The areaW
