FINDING THE EQUATION

OF A QUADRATIC
FUNCTION
OBJECTIVE

Determine the equation of a quadratic

function given: (a) a table of values;
(b) graph;
(c) zeros.
ACTIVITY 1: GIVE ME MY ROOTS!

Given a quadratic equation x2 –x - 6 = 0, find the

roots in three methods.

1. Factoring
2. Quadratic Formula
3. Completing the square
How do you find the equation of the quadratic function whose roots
are equal to the answers you found in the pre-assessment part?
Show your solution.

Example 1. Find a quadratic function whose roots

are -2 and 3.
Example 2. Find a quadratic equation that satisfies
the given set of points:
EXERCISES:
1. The set of points below correspond to a quadratic function.

a. Substitute any three ordered pairs in the equation

y = ax2 + bx + c
b. What are the three equations that you came up with?
c. Using the three equations, solve the values of a, b, and c.
d. What is the equation of the quadratic function?
EXERCISES:

2. Find the equation of the quadratic function whose graph is shown.

Activity: Problem Solving

Problem: A volleyball launched from (0, 0)

followed a parabolic path and touched the net
located at (5, 4) but continued on its original path
and ended up in (6, 0). Find an equation which
describes the path taken by the volleyball.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER:

 The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola, which may cross the x-

axis once, twice or not at all. The x-coordinates of these points of
intersection are called 𝑥-intercepts. The quadratic function can also be
derived from a given set of points on the graph.

 Ifthe vertex of the parabola is given, we can use the vertex form of the
quadratic function.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER:

 If given the vertex and at least one point, then use the vertex form of
the quadratic function. If given the roots 𝑟1 and 𝑟2 and another point,
then the quadratic function is defined by ( 𝑥) = ( 𝑥 – 𝑟1)(𝑥 – 𝑟2) where 𝑎
is determined by substituting the given point.
 Ifgiven any three points or more points, then solve by making a
system of linear equations by substituting the values to the equation 𝑦
= 𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 and solving for the variables 𝑎, 𝑏, and 𝑐.
EVALUATION:

The vertex of a parabola is (-2, -4) and it passes

through (0, 0). What is the equation of the quadratic
function which represents the parabola?
