1. Using row reduction to echelon form, solve the simultaneous equations.

5. O is the origin, A and B are points whose position vectors are a and b respectively. C is
the midpoint of AB. M is the midpoint of OC. AM produced meets OB in point D. Find
the ratio AM:MD (05 marks)
6. The gradient of the tangent to the curve 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏 at the point (1,5) is 𝑡𝑎𝑛−1 (4) .
Find the values of the constants a and b. (05 marks)
7. The 𝑛𝑡ℎ term of a series is 2𝑛 + 3𝑛, calculate the sum of the first 20 terms of the series.

15. 𝑃(𝑎𝑡12 , 2𝑎𝑡1 ) and 𝑄(𝑎𝑡22 , 2𝑎𝑡2 ) are variable points on the parabola 𝑦 2 = 4𝑎𝑥,

a) Show that the equation of the chord PQ is 2𝑥 − (𝑡1 + 𝑡2 ) 𝑦 + 2𝑎𝑡1 𝑡2 = 0

b) If the chord PQ passes through the focus 𝑆(𝑎, 0) , show that 𝑡1 𝑡2 = −1. Hence

determine the equation of the locus of the midpoint of PQ (07 marks)

16. A smaller right circular cone of h cm is inscribed in a bigger right circular cone of height

12cm and base radius 6cm as shown in the diagram

a) Find the volume V of the smaller cone in terms of h.


b) Calculate the value of h at which the volume of the smaller cone is maximum and
express this volume as a fraction of the volume of the bigger cone.
