Laryngeal diseases Symptoms:
■ Hoarseness of voice (dysphonia)
■ Respiratory obstruction (stridor)

DEFINITION
Hoarseness is defined as roughness of voice resulting from va
periodicity and/or intensity of consecutive sound waves.

Stridor is defined as noisy respiration produced by turbulent

• Inspiratory
• Expiratory
• Biphasic
Aetiology
1. It may follow incompletely resolved acute simple
laryngitis or its recurrent attack
2. Presence of Ch. Infections PNS, teeth, tonsils and chest.
3. Occupational factors - exposure to dust and fumes such
as in miners, strokers, gold, iron smiths and workers in
chemical industries
4. Smoking and alcohol
5. Persistent trauma of cough as in chronic lung disease
6. Vocal abuse

Treatment
• Eliminate URTI/LRTI
• Avoidance of irritating factors
• Voice rest and speech therapy
• Steam inhalations
• Expectorants
• Antibiotics
• proton pump inhibitors
