HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF

VOLLEYBALL AND GAME

CHARACTERISTICS
.
William Morgan started volleyball when he had an idea
to blend the game elements of four different sports
namely basketball, tennis and handball in 1895. He was
then the director of Physical Education of YMCA
located in Holyoke Massachusetts. Morgan motivated
by Dr. James Naismith to create a new game with less
body contact among the players unlike in basketball.
The first students who got to play this game were his
students taking up business and it was called as
.
MINTONETTE. The first demonstration of the game
was held on July 7, 1896 when Morgan was invited to a
conference at Springfield College.
Alfred Halstead a faculty member, suggested to change the name of
MINTONETTE to VOLLEYBALL since the ball is volleying back
and forth over the net. In 1960, Elwood S. Brown introduced
volleyball in the Philippines where the first Far East competition was
held. Categories for men and women were opened on that competition
and we were lucky to bring home the first championship trophy in
1913. In 1921, the Philippines opened the first national tournament in
Meralco Gym which was represented by the Meralco team for men
and the Philippine Normal School for women. Both men and women
won the championship
Over the years, volleyball evolved and developed into a competitive sport. In 1922,
the first international volleyball game took place between the United States and
Canada. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was founded in 1947 as
the international governing body for the sports.

In 1916 rules were issued jointly by the YMCA and the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA). The first nationwide tournament in the United States was conducted by
the National YMCA Physical Education Committee in New York City in 1922. The United
States Volleyball Association (USVBA) was formed in 1928 and recognized as the rules-
making, governing body in the United States. From 1928 the USVBA—now known as USA
Volleyball (USAV)—has conducted annual national men’s and senior men’s (age 35 and
older) volleyball championships, except during 1944 and 1945. Its women’s division was
started in 1949, and a senior women’s division (age 30 and older) was added in 1977. Other
national events in the United States are conducted by member groups of the USAV such as the
YMCA and the NCAA.
beach volleyball The outdoor version of volleyball -- a two-on-two competition
played on sand -- was born as a tournament sport in 1948. It grew in popularity
after its introduction at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. It has been a vibrant
professional sports for decades and has become one of the fastest-growing sports at
the collegiate level.

Volleyball has since become a global sport, with millions of people playing and
watching it around the world. The game has also seen various rule changes and
adaptations to make it more exciting and accessible.
Game
characteristics
-Volleyball is a game played by 2 teams with 6
players each playing inside the court and another 6 or
less players for a substitute. A team in volleyball
must have at least 6 players to compete in the sport.

-objective of this sport is to pass the ball among the

team members to create an attack against the
opponent;

they have 3 three opportunities before returning the

ball to their opponents; a single player cannot hit the
ball two times consecutively for it will be a violation
by the team.
- Game starts with a toss coin administered by the referee.
A service is how the volleyball is put into play until it
rallies back and forth over the net inside the court. There
will be a fault if the ball falls out of the playing area, or a
player fails to return the ball over their opponent’s court.

- Volleyball games uses a rally point system which means

there will be an awarded point on every error; a match
usually consists of 3 sets for regular game or 5 sets for
championship game.

- A set has 25 points with 2 points advantage over

opponent to win the set; and the 2 sets win over their
opponents to be declared as a winning team.
Scoring: Points are scored when the ball lands
within the opponent's court or if the opponents
commit a fault. The first team to reach a certain
number of points (usually 25 or 21) with a
minimum two-point advantage wins the set. A
match is typically played as a best-of-five sets.

Substitutions: Teams are allowed substitutions,

where players can be replaced during the game.
However, there are specific rules regarding
substitutions and the number of times a player
can be substituted.
Strategy: Volleyball requires teamwork,
communication, and strategic play. Teams need to
coordinate their movements, anticipate their
opponent's actions, and execute various attacking
and defensive strategies.

Fast-paced and dynamic: Volleyball is known for

its fast-paced and dynamic nature. Players must
have quick reflexes, agility, and good spatial
awareness to react to the ball and make split-
second decisions.
