THE VOLLEYBALL GAME

- A team sport with 6 players on each team and 12 total players.


- It is played outdoor and indoor between teams, in which six members in each side aims to score
25 points in every set or to advance 2 points if deuce happened.

The Young Men's Athletic Association's physical director (YMCA), created volleyball in 1895 at Holyoke,
Massachusetts. It was first known as "mintonette“

1895

The ball came from basketball, the net from tennis and the use of hands from handball. While this made
up a game of volleyball, it was lent some competitive tone with the introduction of innings - later to be
called sets - that was borrowed from baseball.

Alfred Halstead

- He proposed that the name “mintonette” be replaced by “Volley Ball” and this name was
accepted by Morgan.
- He noticed the volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition match in 1896, played at the
International YMCA, Training School, the game quickly became known as volleyball.

1900

A special ball was designed for the sport. The initial configuration of the volleyball ball was a latex
bladder that was constructed out of a material similar to a bicycle tire. The second layer over that
material was a cheesecloth-like material surrounding it. On top of that was a third layer of leather sewn
around the ball.

1910

Elwood Brown, the director of YMCA introduced Manila introduced the game to the Filipino people.

1916

- An offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (set and
spike) were introduced.
- The Filipino’s developed the “bomba” or kill, and called the hitter a “bomberino”
1919

- About 16,000 balls were distributed by the American Expeditionary Forces to their troops and
allies, which sparked the growth of volleyball in new countries.

1920

- Three hits per side and back row attack rules were instituted.

1922

- The first YMCA national championships were held in Brooklyn, NY. 27 teams from 11 states were
represented

1924

- Volleyball was played as part of an American sports demonstration during the Summer Olympics
in Paris.

1928

- The United States Volleyball Association (USVBA, now called USA Volleyball) was formed.

 1947 – The Federation International e de Volleyball was founded in Paris.

● 1949 – The first World Championships for men were held in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

● 1964 - Tokyo, Japan, hosted the first summer volleyball Olympic competition gave us modern version of the ball

● 1983 - The Association of Volleyball Professionals was formed.

● 1987 – The FIVB added a beach Volleyball World Championship Series.

● 1990 – World league was created.

Terminologies:

 Ace - Serve that result directly in a point.


 Foul - Violation of the rules.
 Serve - Skill used by player in back-right position to put ball into play.
 Approach - Fast stride toward the net by a spiker before he jumps in the air.
 Game Point - Last point in a game.

 Side Out - When serving team fails to win the point or makes an illegal play.
 Block - Defensive play by one or more players used to intercept a spiked ball in an attempt to rebound it
back into the opponent’s court.
 Hitter – Spiker or attacker
 Rotation - Clockwise movement of players prior to the new serving term of a team.
 Dig - Passing a spiked or powerfully hit ball.
 Out of Bounds - When a ball lands completely outside of the boundary lines.
 Kill - An attack that results in an immediate point or side out.
