The game of Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a teacher at a YMCA in Holyoke,
Massachusetts. He combined parts of tennis, baseball, basketball and handball to create a new game
called Mintonette as a pastime to be played indoors by people who wanted less physical contact than
basketball. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), was founded in 1947, and the first Wold
Championship were held in 1949 for men and 1952 for women. The sport was officially included in the
program for the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Volleyball was called mintonette at first but it was later changed to volleyball, to describe the way
players volley the ball back and forth over the net. Volleyball is played by two teams of six players on a
court divided by a net.The object of the game is to send the ball over the net so that the opposing team
cannot return the ball or prevent it from hitting the ground in their court. Each team has three hits to
attempt to return the ball. The ball is put in play by a serve that is hit by the server over the net to the
opponent. When the receiving team wins a volley, it gains the right to serve, and the players rotate one
position clockwise. When the serving team wins a volley, it wins a point and the right to continue serving.
The ball must clear the net on a serve.A game is played to 25 points or some other agreed upon number.
The team that wins the best two out of three games wins the match. The Skills need in Volleyball are
SERVE, PASS, SET, ATTACK, BLOCK and DIG. The Players: Setters, Libero's, Middle Blockers or Middle
Hitters, Outside Hitters or Left Side Hitters, Opposite Hitters or Right side Hitters.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is played with a ball and a hoop. Players
score points by shooting the ball through the hoop.Basketball has a very fast and exciting pace of play.
Also, each player on the court gets to play both offense and defense and the roles of each player are
only loosely defined. Much of basketball easily can be practiced (like shooting or dribbling) with one
person making it easy to learn. The sport also is great for one-on-one play all the way up to 5-on-5, so
you don't need a big crowd to get a good game going.

Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith. He invented the sport for indoors play at the YMCA
during the Massachusetts winter. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets for
goals. The sport spread from the YMCA to colleges where the first basketball leagues were formed. As
the sport gained popularity at the college level professional leagues were formed and, in 1936,
basketball became an Olympic sport. Today the NBA (National Basketball Association) is one of the most
popular professional sports leagues in the world.
