1. Briefly describe volleyball as a sport in terms of origin, manner of playing and skills.

In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in
Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game
for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created
the game of Volleyball. Per Morgan, the game was fit for the gymnasium or exercise hall but, could also
be played outdoor. The first volleyball net, borrowed from tennis, was only 6’6″ high. Morgan called the
sport “mintonette,” until a professor from Springfield College in Massachusetts noted the volleying
nature of play and proposed the name of “volleyball.”

The game of volleyball is played by two teams, six on each team. The teams are separated by a net
and compete with one another using an inflated ball. A point or rally is started when one team serves
the ball. The player serving the ball must stand behind the end line or restraining line at the back of the
court until after they have contacted the volleyball. To serve a player hits the ball with their hand over
the net and into the opposing team's side. If the ball doesn't go over the net or hits the ground, the
point is over. The opposing team must now return the ball without letting it hit the ground. They can hit
the ball up to three times. No single player can hit the ball twice in a row (blocks don't count). Typically a
team will try to set up an attack. They use the first two hits to set the ball for a spike or hard hit over the
net. The two teams continue hitting the ball back and forth until the point ends. A point can end by one
team hitting a winning shot that hits the ground within the opponent's court or by one team causing a
fault and losing the point. Every time a team wins a point, they will rotate their position in a clockwise
direction around the court. The object of the game is to score 25 points first.

Volleyball is a high-speed game that requires athleticism, endurance and power. The six basic
volleyball skills are setting, spiking, passing, digging, serving and blocking

Setting
A setters main job is to set spikers. This is done by waiting for a teammate to pass the ball to them.
Spiking
A spiker (attacker) is a player that attacks a ball over the net. The spiker is a front row player and their
main job is to spike balls at the net down into the opponents court.
Passing
A passer is a player that passes the ball up to the setter. The better a passer is able to pass, the easier it
is for the setter to set the spiker which results in a better attack by the spiker and the more likely the
ball is hit down into the opponents court for a point.
Digging
A digger is a defensive player that passes the ball up to the setter. The digger is skilled at digging hard
driven spikes and chasing down off-speed shots (attacks) by the opponent.
Serving
The server is the player on the team that puts the ball into play to start the rally. The players that
understand how to play volleyball the best are typically the best servers on the team.
Blocking
A block is the first opportunity for a team on defense to keep the team on offense from hitting into their
court.
