VOLLEYBALL Slides by Marc Cabral (2-C1)

WHAT IS VOLLEYBALL?
Volleyball is a sport in which two teams of six
players use their hands to hit a ball back and
forth over a high net, attempting to get the ball
to touch the court within the opponents'
playing area before it can be returned.
HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL
William G. Morgan, the physical director of
the Young Men's Christian Association
(YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, invented
volleyball in 1895. It was created as an indoor
sport for business people who felt basketball
to be too strenuous.
ITS MAIN GOAL
The goal of the game is for each team
to send the ball over the net and onto
the opposing team's court while
preventing the ball from being planted
on their own. The serving player places
the ball in play.

WARM UP EXERCISES BEFORE
PLAYING VOLLEYBALL
Leg bends, leg swings, shoulder/ arm circles,
jumping jacks, jumping rope, lunges, squats,
walking or a slow jog, yoga, torso twists,
standing side bends, lateral shuffle, butt
kickers, knee bends, and ankle circles are all
examples of warm-up exercises.
ATTIRES THAT MUST BE WORN
WHEN PLAYING VOLLEYBALL
T-shirt jerseys with tight, very short spandex
cycling shorts are worn by women. Men's
sleeveless jersey tops are frequently paired
with athletic, basketball-style shorts that hit
just above the knee. Knee pads and
lightweight athletic shoes with rubber or
composite soles are worn by the players.
WHAT ARE THE REASONS BEHIND
VOLLEYBALL'S POPULARITY IN
THE PHILIPPINES?
Volleyball in the Philippines is an image
result.During this time, US soldiers stationed
on various Philippine islands assisted in the
broad introduction of volleyball to the
Filipinos. During their time off from military
duty, these American military personnel urged
the Filipinos to join them in playing.
THE SIX BASIC
VOLLEYBALL SKILLS
PASSING
SETTING
SPIKING
BLOCKING
DIGGING
SERVING
PASSING
A volleyball pass is made with the goal of passing
the ball to a colleague known as the setter.
SETTING
Setters orchestrate the offense of the team. They are the
playmakers, point guards, or the quarterbacks of the volleyball
team. A setter's responsibility is to run the team's offense and build
up offensive scoring opportunities for the team.
SPIKING
A volleyball spike or attack is the strategy used to send the ball
over the net to the opponent in such a manner that ball is not
returnable.
BLOCKING
is a skill wherein the player deflects the ball from the
opponent. The goal is to prevent a successful attack and the other
team from scoring a point. The blocker's job is to block the spiked
ball so that it goes back to the opposing team's side of the court.
DIGGING
A dig is a pass of a hard-driven ball from the other team. Like a pass, your
arm position and platform remain the same. The difference is that the ball is
coming from a high point above the net and hit in a downward trajectory.
When passing the ball is coming from 30 feet away and usually below the
height of the net.
SERVING
is used to put the ball into play to start the volley. The serve is the
only skill controlled solely by one player. Advanced players take
advantage of this fact by developing their serving skills.
