Ask your classmate what is his/her
favorite color.
PEER SHARING ACTIVITY
Can we consider white and black as a
color?
Black and White
These two are not actual colors. The object
appears black because no light illuminates it
or because all the light rays that hit its
surface are absorbed and no light is
reflected.
Black is the absence of reflected light which
causes no energy to activate the human eye
so you see nothing. On the contrary, white
is a combination of all colors. The light of all
wavelengths that hit them is reflected.
White light is made up of wavelengths of light
and each wavelength is a particular color. The 7
colors that make this up are red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo, and violet (ROYGBIV). Its
wavelength which ranges from 700nm (red)-
300nm (violet) possesses an energy that could
activate the receptors of human eyes
Color is not a property of a matter but
it is the result of which wavelengths are
reflected in our eyes. You see a red
shirt because the dye molecules of the
fabric have absorbed the orange,
yellow, green, indigo, and violet, and
only the red wavelength is reflected.
Colors that don’t match the material’s
natural frequency will be reflected and
this is the color that appears to the
observer.
The primary colors of light
are red, green, and blue.
When these three are
added, it produces a white
light. Adding 2 primary
colors in equal proportions
results in secondary colors
of light such as yellow,
cyan, and magenta.
When these three secondary
colors are added, it results in
black. This is because they are
subtractive colors. Since yellow
is the absence of blue, magenta
is the absence of green and
cyan is the absence of red, this
results in the absence of the
primary colors or the absence
of light
Complementary colors
These are primary and
secondary colors that result
in white light when added.
For example, a green light
(primary) + magenta
(secondary) = white light.
PEER SHARING ACTIVITY
Why does the sun, a yellow star,
appears brighter to us than other
stars?
Let’s understand what happens to our eyes when we have
prolonged exposure to colored screens or reading materials.
The retina of our eyes contains rods and cones which are
called photoreceptors. The rods only work at night or in dark
areas while the cones which are responsible for detecting
colors work on bright lights. There are 3 color receptors,
blue cones, red cones, and green cones. These cones allow
the brain to perceive signals from the retina as different
But what happens when you stare at one color for too long? This
will lead to fatigue of the color receptor that detects that color.
For example, when you stare at something red, your red cones will
become tired. However, the remaining cones (green and blue),
which are cyan when combined, are completely rested. Thus,
when you look at a blank white area, there is a floating cyan
image, The white screen minus the fatigued color (red) produces
the complementary color (cyan). This is an optical illusion called
after-image. Besides, our eyes are easily fatigued with red color
because about 64% of the cones are red. This may be the reason
why most restaurants are painted red so that there will be over-
stimulation of your eye’s red receptors and become "fatigued" and
subsequently, you will feel hungry
