Use a Bar Graph to Summarize Plan

Open the Budget Workbook in Excel Online

Duplicate the Worksheet

You are going to make a graph of the planned budget from the data in columns B and F.
These columns are not beside each other. Excel Online does not allow you to select non-
adjacent cells, or in other words, cells that are not beside each other. To solve the problem,
create a duplicate of the worksheet and work from the copy to hide the columns you do not
need.

▷ Right c lic k on the Plan sheet tab.

▷ Choose Duplic ate from the menu.

Have fun with c olor.

C hoose Tab Color from the
menu and pick a color.

Rename the Tab

▷ The Plan sheet has been duplicated and is called Plan (2).
Right click on the Plan (2) sheet tab and choose
Rename.

▷ Type Plan Graph. Clic k OK.

Reorder Worksheets

▷ Right c lic k on the Plan sheet tab.

▷ Choose Reorder from the menu.

▷ Choose Plan Graph from the dialog box and c lic k OK.

Put your worksheets in order!

You c an also drag a sheet
tab to rearrange worksheet
order.

Hide C olumns
You cannot select non adjacent cells in Excel Online. So, to prepare to the data for
graphing you will hide some of the cells.

▷ Clic k c olumn heading C to select the entire c olumn.

▷ Hold down the SHIFT key and click column heading E.

Select the data to represent in the graph. By hiding columns C, D, and E, columns B and F
are now beside one another.

▷ Select all the cells in the Item column and all the cells in the Total column.

Create a Graph

▷ From the Insert tab, select Column.

Choose Clustered C olumn.

▷ Move the graph beside or under the data table

The taller the bar, the

more money the item
c osts. The shorter the
bar, the less money the
item c osts.

Format the Graph

Add a Graph Title

▷ From the C hart Tools Chart tab c lic k Chart

▷ Type Spending Plan. Clic k

OK.

Add a Horizontal Axis

Remove the
Legend

▷ Click Legend.
Choose None.

Analyze the Graph

1. What item costs the most money?

2. What item costs the least money?

3. Describe your plan:

 Are you planning to buy a few items that are more expensive?
 Are you planning to buy many items that are inexpensive?
 Are you planning to buy a combination of expensive and inexpensive items?

4. Study the bar graph. Do you want to change how you plan to spend your money?
If yes, what change do you want to make? If no, why do you like your plan?
