TYPES OF SOLIDS

MADE BY: VIPLAV AWASTHI

ROLL NO: 57
Crystalline and Amorphous Solids

 Solids are divided into two categories

CRYSTALLINE SOLIDS
AMORPHOUS SOLIDS
Melting Point

 Amorphous solids do not have sharp  Crystalline solids have sharp melting
melting point. They melt over a point
temperature range.
Structure
 Crystalline solids have a definite
geometrical shape Amorphous solids do not posses a
definite geometrical shape
Properties vs. Direction

 Amorphous solids have isotropic  Crystalline solids possess anisotropic

properties, i.e., the magnitude of physical properties
properties is same in all directions
Cleavage property

 When crystalline solids are cut with a When amorphous solids are cut, they split into
sharp edged tool, they split into two two pieces and the newly generated surfaces
pieces and the newly generated surfaces are irregular in shape
are plain and smooth
