WHAT IS FAMILY?

• FAMILY CAME FROM THE LATIN WORD “FAMILIA” IS


A GROUP OF PEOPLE RELATED EITHER BY
CONSANGUINITY (BY RECOGNIZED BIRTH) OR
AFFINITY (BY MARRIAGE OR OTHER RELATIONSHIP.
• THE PURPOSE OF FAMILIES IS TO MAINTAIN THE
WELL-BEING OF ITS MEMBERS AND OF SOCIETY.
TYPES OF FAMILY
NUCLEAR FAMILY

• The nuclear family is the traditional type of


family structure. This family type consists of
two parents and children.
• The nuclear family was long held in esteem by
society as being ideal in which to raise children.

SINGLE PARENT FAMILY
• The single parent family consists of one parent
raising one or more children on his own.
• This family many include a single mother with
her children, a single dad with his kids, or
single person with their kids. This limits income
and opportunities in many cases, although
many single parent families have support from
relatives and friends.

EXTENDED FAMILY
• The extended family structure consists of two or more
adults who are related, either by blood or marriage, living
in the same home. Many extended families include
cousins, aunt or uncles and grandparents living together.
This family structure may form due to financial
difficulties or because older relatives are unable to care
for themselves alone.

CHILDLESS FAMILY

• Childless families consist of two partners


living and working together. Many childless
familles take on the responsibility of pet
ownership or have extensive contact with
their nieces and nephews
STEP FAMILY

• Over half of all marriage end in divorce, and many of


these individuals choose to get remarried. This creates
the step or blended family which involves two separate
families merging into one new unit. It consist of a new
husband, wife, or spouse and their children from
previous merriages or relationships.
GRANDPARENT FAMILY

• A grandparent family is a family with grandchildren


and no parents present in the intervening
generation. This could be due to parents death,
addiction, abandonment or being unfit parents,
many grandparents need to go back to work or find
additional sources of income to help raise them
grandchildren.
WHAT IS MARRIAGE?

• Also called matrimony or wedlock, is a culturally


recognized union between people, called
spouses, that enables rights and obligations
between them, as well as between them and
thier children, and between them and their in
laws. A marriage ceremony is called a wedding.

Marrying one person at a time.

When who have more than one
husband.

The practice of having more than
one spouse at the same time.

A man who has more than one
wife.
SAME SEX MARRIAGE
Partners of the same sex who are married. The
main goal of marriage, earlier on, was to act as an
alliance between families. Throughout history, and
even today , family arranged marriages for couples.
Most couples didn’t marry because they were in
love, but for economic liaisons.

• PATRILINEAL affiliates, a person with a group of


relatives through his or her father

•MATRILINEAL affiliates a person with a group


of relatives through he or her mother
• BILATERAL affiliates a person with a group of relatives through
both his or her

BASED ON AUTHORITY
• PATRIARCHAL authority h vested on the oldest male in
the family often the father
• MATRIARCHAL authority is vested in the mother.
• MATRICENTRIC prolonged absence of the father
position gives the mother a dominant position in the
family Although the father may also share with the
mother in decision making.
BASED ON INTERNAL GRGANIZATION &
MEMBERSHIP

• NUCLEAR FAMILY also known as primary


or elementary family
• Extended family- extensions maybe through
the parents child relationship of husband-
wife relationship, in in polygamous marriage
