Christ – describes
Jesus’ mystery, life, and
mission
In knowing Jesus there are two
things that we should ask:
Sadducees
Pharisees
Scribes
Zealots
On so many occasions, they would trap
Jesus to prove if He is really the
Messiah or just an impostor. Some
Pharisees and Sadducees even went to
test if He is really from God.
What are your experiences
that gave doubt in you about
God?
Jesus asked His disciples,
“But you, who do you say
that I am?” Simon Peter
answered, “You are the
Messiah, the Son of the living
God” Mt 16:15-16
Messiah is a Hebrew term for
Christ. In saying that Jesus is the
Messiah, Peter showed not just his
deep personal knowledge of Jesus,
but more importantly, his
profound faith in the Lord.
Because of this, Jesus made Peter
–which means “rock”
–the foundation of the Church he
was to establish and entrusted
him the keys of heaven.
To understand Jesus as the Christ, that
is, the Messiah, is the core of our
Christian faith. Both the biblical
references to Jesus as the Messiah and
our profession of faith that is the
Anointed One express the fundamental
truth about the person and mission of
Jesus Christ our Lord.
The word ‘Christ’ comes from the Greek
translation of the Hebrew word
‘Messiah,’ which means ‘anointed.’ it
became a proper to Jesus only because
He accomplished perfectly the divine
mission that the name “Christ” signifies.
In effect, in Israel, those consecrated to
God for a mission were anointed in His
name. This was the case for kings,
priests, and in rare instances prophets.
It is necessary that the Messiah be
anointed by the Spirit of the Lord at
once as king and priest, and also as
prophet.
Jesus fulfilled the messianic hope of
Israel in his threefold office of priest,
prophet, and king.
At your baptism you were marked with
oil as a sign that you are consecrated to
God and anointed by the Holy Spirit.
Your anointing also was a sign that you
are joined to Christ and share in his
threefold mission as prophet, priest,
and king.
A prophet is a messenger sent by God, a
person who speaks for God. He or she
witnesses to God, calls people to
conversion, and may also foretell the
future. A prophet is one who teaches
others the way they should live, so as to
avoid evil and embrace the good.
A priest is a mediator, or bridge,
between God and human beings. He
offers sacrifice to God on behalf of all.
A king is a shepherd, one who governs
and uses his authority so that others may
be brought to the fullness of their
potential. The gift of authority, in the
Church, is only properly used when it is
employed to build up the Church, and
grow the kingdom of God, which is like a
seed. Christ is the King, ruling over all
things. Over His church He reigns by
means of His Holy Spirit (Acts 2:30–33). He
sovereignly gives repentance to the
impenitent and bestows forgiveness on
the guilty (Acts 5:31).
To the shepherds, the angel
announced the birth of Jesus as
the Messiah promised to Israel:
“To you is born this day in the
city of David a savior, who is
Christ the Lord.”
God called Joseph to “take
Mary as your wife, for that
which is conceived in her is the
Holy Spirit,” so that Jesus who
is called Christ, should be born
of Joseph’s spouse into the
messianic lineage of David.
...
Conclusion:
Jesus’ messianic consecration
reveals his divine mission, “for the
name, Christ, implies ‘he who
anointed,’ ‘he who was anointed’
and ‘the very anointing with which
he was anointed.’ The one who
anointed is the Father, the one who
was anointed is the Son, and he
was anointed with the Spirit who is
the anointing.”
