Highlands of Luzon
is the largest and referred to as
one of the primary group of
islands in the country which
include the Luzon mainland, the
Batanaes and Babuyan group of
islands in the northernmost part.
The mountain range encompasses
all provinces of the Cordillera
Administrative Region (Abra,
Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao,
Kalinga and Mountain Province).

our country. The place is often
visited by typhoons as the island is
surrounded with the wide and

The Ivatans live in houses
made of coral and limestone
cement with thatched roofs
made of grass. Their houses
have square structures that
have two big windows as big
as doorways. The presence of
typhoons all year round,
needs that the houses' walls
and roofs to be built almost a
meter thick, while the floor is
raised about two meters high.

famous for their
mastery of wood
carving.
Bul-ol
An example of this is the carving of
their deity, bul-ol. This deity is
important to them because they
believe they can have an
abundant harvest when this
carving is placed near rice
granaries.

Hagabi
It is made of stone. is a bench
that is only used among
the rich Ifugao. Usually
carved out of a single tree
trunk, it is a symbol of
wealth and prestige.
Textile weaving of the Ifugao’s.
Ifugao’s weave blankets, upper
garments, G-strings, hand bags,
belts, and a lot more. It has been
part of their tradition to weave
for their family’s clothing needs.
At present, weaving is a good
source of income for many
Ifugao.

They use blankets for storing
of grains and cooked food;
keeping household utensils,
clothes, and personal
belongings.

Gaddang
The Gaddang people are a
linguistically-identified ethnic
group of related families sharing
lengthy residence in the watershed
of the Cagayan River in Northern

In the old days, the Gaddang lived in
houses built on high branches of trees.
These afung (dwellings) were built 6 to
20 meters from ground level. Entry to the
afung was through a detachable ladder,
which was drawn up at night for security.
The construction of the afung was
probably in response to Ilongot head
taking raids. As the communities grew
bigger, lower houses became common.

They are a dominant ethnic


group in Cagayan
