Definition

• Adaptive shortening of the muscle-tendon unit and other

soft tissues that cross or surround a joint resulting in
significant resistance to passive or active stretch and
limitation of ROM, which may compromise functional
abilities.
• It develops when normally elastic connective tissues
become replaced with inelastic fibrous tissues.
• It produces restrictions on mobility and the performance
of ADL's.
Types of contractures

• JOINT CONTRACTURES • MUSCLE

• Cartilage damage, Synovial CONTRACTURE
proliferations, Effusion, Capsular • Trauma, Atrophy, Spasticity,
fibrosis Paralysis
• SOFT TISSUE • MIXED
CONTRACTURES CONTRACTURES
• Immobilization, Burns, Tendinitis
Pathological classification

• Myotatic contracture • Periarticular

• Reduction in sarcomere units • Intra-articular pathology
• No pathology
• Pseudomyostatic • Fibrotic
• CNS lesion • Fibrous changes in
• Constant state of contracture connective tissues
Club foot
contracture

Clubfoot most often

presents at birth.
Clubfoot is caused by a
shortened Achilles
tendon, which causes
the foot to turn in and
under
Casting and bracing.
Dupuytren's
contracture
Dupuytren's contracture
is an abnormal
thickening of tissues in
the palm of the hand.
The thickened tissues
may develop into a hard
lump. Over time it can
cause 1 or more fingers
to curl (contract) or pull
in toward the palm.

prevention
Primary prevention

• Moving muscles and joints through theri full range on a

daily basis.
• It increases muscle strength and improve ROMs and
reduces the chances of contractures.
Secondary prevention

• Stretching
• Splints
• Range of motion exercises
• Active Assisted or passive exercises
• Pain management
• Therapeutic heating
• Surgical treatments
Tertiary prevention

• Educating society
• Avoiding sedentary lifestyle
• Rehab programs
