Scholarly Reflections - Tips

• Be explicit:
o State the learning outcome.
o Explain the artifact.
o Don’t assume that readers will know!
• Showcase your learning:
• Don’t just tell reader that you have achieved the learning outcome but “show”
them
• Give specific examples:
• Share highlights from artifact
• Share examples of what you learned or how you apply it
• Reference scholarly literature throughout
Scholarly Reflection
- Learning Outcome 1
Showcase your Learning
• For LO1, “show” us what you know about different
institution types or contexts or leadership:
• Elgin’s mission statement aligns with its purpose as a
community college, to serve the local community. The
emphasis is on vocational training and preparing students for
jobs that allow them to improve their lives.
• Note: You could use citations to support that this is what
community colleges do.
Scholarly Reflection
- Learning Outcome 2
Showcase your Learning
• For LO2, “show” us that you understand theories and
how to apply them
• Provide a description of the theory/theories
• Provide an example of how you either have or could apply the
theory (be specific)
Scholarly Reflection
- Learning Outcome 3
Showcase your Learning
• For LO3, “show” us the theories/knowledge that you
applied to practice
• Describe the theories/knowledge
• Describe how you applied them and give examples
Scholarly Reflection
- Learning Outcome 4
Showcase your Learning
• For LO4, “show” us that you understand the value of
assessment, how to conduct assessments, and how to
apply them
• Discuss why it’s important to know how to do assessment as a
practitioner
• Describe some of the ways you collected or analyzed data
(briefly)
• Describe how you could use the knowledge you gained to
improve practice
Scholarly Reflection
- Learning Outcome 5
Showcase your Learning
• For LO5, “show” us that you know how to engage in
praxis that fosters equity and inclusion
• Share examples
• Include knowledge on the group/population you’re hoping to
serve or the barriers you’re hoping to remove
Scholarly Reflection - Tips

Referencing scholarly literature throughout.

Community colleges, in general, are known for having

open access policies and serving a diverse group of
students (Bragg, 2001; Clay, 2012).
Scholarly Reflection - Tips

Tip for finding literature:

- You KNOW these things already! Figure out what it is

you want to say, then find the literature to back you up!
- Skim articles!
Managing Feedback
• Review feedback, make a note of questions
• Take a step back
• Reflect, note any additional questions
• Get clarification
• Create a list of revisions needed
• Address the simple things
• Address the bigger things
• Review new draft and compare to feedback

Scholarly Reflections
- Example Introductions
Ana: In our HESA 500: Foundations of Higher Education course in the Fall of 2020, we were challenged to
analyze two mission statements from two differing institutions with distinct Carnegie Classifications and write a
paper confronting the similarities and differences and how each institution's missions dictate what they value.

Others:
One of my elective courses, Community College Students, challenged me to examine an organization I had little
familiarity with: community colleges.
One of my elective courses, Community College Students, challenged me to analyze the unique context,
organizational structures, and intended outcomes of community colleges in the United States.
One of the outcomes of our HESA program is to examine different organizations, contexts, and leadership in
higher education. To highlight my growth related to this outcome, I chose my paper on student subcultures. This
assignment challenged me to consider how the political climate in the country as well as institutional history,
structure, policies, and practices shape the experiences of LGBTQ+ students.

- Introduction
• I am passionate about promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in my
professional praxis. ….. One artifact from a class that shows my
commitment to ongoing learning related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
is …..
• Throughout the HESA program, I have multiple opportunities to learn
about theory-to-practice model. Through my coursework, I learned about
different theories and scholarly literature. My assistantship then allowed
me to apply these theories. In this scholarly reflection, I will specifically
talk about a presentation I completed for my HESA XXX course and how
I used what I learned from that presentation when working with a student
in my assistantship.

- Explaining your Choice of Artifact
I chose my mission analysis paper as my artifact because it
showcases my ability to analyze how institution’s culture
and values, as expressed in a mission statement (Morphew r t i f a ct is
A e o f
& Hartley, 2006), differ, which leads to different s e n ta t i v
rep r e
experiences for students attending these institutions.

I chose my legal issues paper because it highlights my u t co m e.
o
ability to examine the legal landscape and understand how
legal decisions shape our policies and processes at higher
education institutions.
Scholarly Reflection
- Highlighting Your Learning
When I was a student, I had not thought to examine the mission statement.
Completing this assignment, I learned that analyzing the culture and
values of an institution would have allowed me to identify whether the
institution will have the resources and opportunities I am interested in. t e

While I was aware that LGBTQ+ students create their own communities growth
on campus through my own experiences as an undergraduate student, the
subcultures paper challenged me to examine the impact organizational
cultures have on student experiences. Gaining these insights helps me
identify structural and organizational changes that are needed to better
support LGBTQ+ students at my institution.
Scholarly Reflection
- Incorporating Literature
Ana: As Morphew & Hartley (2006) discussed, an institution’s i m s

mission statement can be used to demonstrate to its constituents Suppor ture;
and prospective members the culture and values of an institution. h l i t e r a

Mariela: With that being said, the history I learned that first litera in
semester was crucial to me understanding the full context of u s s e d

higher education and student affairs. It furthered my purpose to
detail
always fight for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)
because history shows that higher education was initially made
for white men only (Wilder, 2013).
