Hard Disk Drive(HDD)

• It is a data storage device in a computer

• It is a secondary storage device
• It’s stored in 0 or 1
• The operating system , software and most other files are
stored in the HDD
• It invested in 1954 by IBM
• Now a day , HDD with 3.5 inch or 5.25 inch platters in
different capacities , such as 10GB, 20GB, 40GB, 80GB etc.
Types of Hard Disk Drive

• IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics)/PATA(Parallel

Advance Technology Attachment Drive)
• SATA (Serial Advance Technology Attachment Drive)
• SCSI (Small Computer System Interface Drive)
• SAS (Serial Attached SCSI Drive)
IDE/PATA
IDE/PATA

• IDE/PATA Drives have usually 40 pins.

• IDE/PATA Drives offer 133 MB/sec transfer rate.
• It sends 8 bit data at a time.
• PATA Cables are used to connect PATA HDD. Two
drives can be connected in a single pata cable. One
as master and other as slave.
SATA
SATA

• SATA Drives have usually 7 pins, 4 pins in pair of two

for sending and receiving data and rest 3 pins are
grounded.
• SATA Drives offers generally 300MB/sec transfer rate.
• It sends data bit by bit.
• SATA Cables are used to connect SATA HDD. Only one
drive can be connected in a single sata cable.
SCSI
SCSI

• SCSI Drives have usually 50 to 68 pins.

• SCSI Drive offers generally 640MB/sec transfer rate.
• This drives are hot swappable.
• SCSI cables are used to connect SCSI HDD. Maximum
of 16 drives can be connected in a single scsi cable.
Each hdd have a 8 bytes hexadecimal code known
as WWN (worldwide name) for its identification in
the cable.
SAS
SAS

• SAS Drives generally offers 805 MB/sec transfer rate.

• This drives are hot swappable.
• SAS Cables are used to connect SAS Drives. Maximum
of 128 drives can be connected in a single sas cable.
Component of HDD
• DISK PLATTER
1. The platter is made up of a magnetic material, in the flat disk
part of the drive.
2. The data stored in the platter.
3. Each set of magnetic particles is collection a unit called a bit

• STEPPER MOTOR
1. Use stepper motors for controlling read/write head position
2. Stepper motors usually use +12V power, but some new low
power drives use +5V power source.
CONT…
• SPINDLE MOTOR
1. It control the platter
2. This motor rotates at a speed of 3600 to 10000 r.p.m.
3. All the platter moves in the same direction.

• READ AND WRITE HEAD

1. The heads read and write the information to the drive platter.
2. The head writes magnetic information on the platter.

• HEAD ARM
1. Used for read and write operations.
Performance of Hard disk
• Data Rate- the data rate is the number of bytes per
second that the drive can deliver to the CPU. Rates
between 5 and 40 Megabytes per second are common.
• Seek Time- the seek time is the amount of time
between when the CPU requests a file and when the
first byte of the file is sent to the CPU. Times between
10 and 20 milliseconds are common.
The other important parameter is the capacity of the drive,
which is the number of bytes it can hold.
Main problem created in HDD

• No operating system
No operating system in Hard Disk

• Disk boot Failure

(Cable problem) or (HDD Not Detect)
HDD capacity and size info

• When pure chasing a hard disk drive, the term

megabytes, gigabytes or terabytes may be confusing
terms. The following table gives you an example of
each of these terms and how they compare to other
sizes
.
HDD capacity and size info
Term Equal to
Bit 0 or 1
Kb(kilobit) 1,024 bits
Byte 8 bits
KB(Kilobyte) 1,024 Byte
MB(Megabyte) 1,024 Kilobyte
GB(Gigabyte) 1,024 Megabyte
TB(Terabyte) 1,024 Gigabyte
PB(Petabyte) 1,024 Terabyte
EB(Exabyte) 1,024 Petabyte
ZB(Zetabyte) 1,024 Exabyte
YB(Yottabyte) 1,024 Zetabytes
