Adolf Franz Heep was a German-

Brazilian architect who lived from July
24, 1902, until April 3, 1978. He is well
recognized for his work in So Paulo
during the city's verticalization in the
1950s and 1960s. Edifice Italia,
previously the city of So Paulo's highest
skyscraper at 165 meters, is his
trademark achievement. In 1992, the
city of So Paulo classified it as a
landmark structure. Heep also served as
a teacher at So Paulo's Mackenzie
Presbyterian University and afterwards
for the United Nations.
ADOLF HEEP AS AN ARCHITECT
Adolf Franz Heep was one of the most influential
architects of the 1950s and 1960s in So Paulo and
Brazil, leaving his stamp on the city's powerful
architectural situations. Around that time, he designed
lots of new structures, some of which have gone on to
become landmarks of Brazilian architecture, as well as
contributing to the transformation of So Paulo into a
modern city.
TYPE OF BUILDINGS THAT
HEEP DESIGNES:

Heep concentrated on vertical housing

projects, resulting in the construction of
two dozen residential structures. From
luxurious houses in Higienópolis to little
kitchenettes in the heart of So Paulo, his
work was diverse. Edifcio Itália, his most
famous piece, was created during this
time. The construction of the So
Domingos Church in Perdizes, which
began in 1952 and lasted 14 years, was
considered Heep's greatest achievement.
Heep was known for "rigorous technical
design in construction, specifications, and
finishing, as well as proper planning."
