Social Innovation is about the IDEA.

And not just any “new idea.”

For the social sector, social innovation has to

be an idea — in the form of a product, service
or method that focuses on addressing societal
challenges, and improving community well-being

• Product-Based Innovations :

The innovation lies in the product itself, which is developed keeping in mind its
affordability, accessibility, and relevance to solving a specific social problem.

Process-Based Innovations : are about creating new ways of
doing things. This could involve innovating in service delivery,
organizational models, or methodologies that lead to social
improvement.

The Challenge
Annually, more than 10 million pregnant women suffer from preeclampsia
worldwide, with clinical symptoms in the last trimester, making it fatal for
both mother and child.

The Challenge
The effect of maternal and child undernutrition is enormous: 178 million
children under age 5 are stunted; 55 million children are wasted of which 19
million suffer from severe acute malnutrition resulting in undernutrition being
the underlying cause of 3.6 million deaths each year.

Innovation
A formulation for topical delivery of micronutrients, helping in supplementing
required dietary micronutrients.

Funding Raised - Rs 1.4 Cr

The Challenge
One of the major cause of maternal death is due to hemorrhage which can be
managed by blood transfusion. Unfortunately there is usually a shortage of
blood supply due to poor management and logistics resulting in wastage of
blood.

Innovation
A smart blood bag monitoring device for safe and reliable blood transfusion in
rural India.

The Challenge
Iron deficiency and Anaemia continues to be a major public health problem
with about 50% of pregnant women still anaemic in India. Still there has
been discontinuation and nonadherence to IFA supplementations by the
patients because of their side effects, unpleasant taste & smell and
superstitious beliefs revolving around them.

Innovation
Hydrogel-based, slow-release iron jelly candy, which serves as an alternative for
iron/folic acid (IFA) and Vitamin C tablets.

ENTREPRENEURS:

1) They fall in love with the problem and not the

solution.

2) They believe no one owns a social solution.

3)They know impact is the bottom line of the social

sector. They don’t rely on innovation and invention
alone; they prove impact and pursue scale — making
them both visionary and disciplined in their
approach.

• Mead said that the first sign of civilization
in an ancient culture was a femur
(thighbone) that had been broken and then
healed. Mead explained that in the animal
kingdom, if you break your leg, you die.
You cannot run from danger, get to the
river for a drink or hunt for food. You are
meat for prowling beasts. No animal
survives a broken leg long enough for the
bone to heal.
• A broken femur that has healed is
evidence that someone has taken time to
stay with the one who fell, has bound up
the wound, has carried the person to
safety and has tended the person through
recovery. Helping someone else through
difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead
said."
