Activity
Group Work
Procedure
• Select metal and non-metal elements to combine
• Note for electronegativity and subtract the
electronegativity of metal and non-metal
(difference must be 1.9 and above)
• Write the Lewis symbol/structure
• Use an arrow to show complete transfer of
electron
A mixture of two or more
elements

When two or more elements are

combined through a chemical reaction
then a compound is formed.
Example

Li + Cl
* If the difference(electronegativity) is greater than 1.9, then
complete transfer of electron/s is possible.

Valence electron are the electron/s in the outermost shell of an

atom
Octet rule:
• The word “octet” comes from the
Greek root “oct” means eight.
• The octet rule dictate that atoms are
most stable when their valence shell
are filled with eight electrons.
Example

Li + Cl
* If the difference(electronegativity) is greater that 1.9, then
complete transfer of electron/s is possible.

Valence electron are the electron/s in the outermost shell of an

atom
Example

Mg + O
