SOCIETY AND SOCIALIZATION
SOCIETY

A group of individuals that with persistent social interaction.

A social group sharing the same social territory, typically under

the same political authority, culture and beliefs.

A society’s values and norms are passed on to or acquired

by its members through socialization or enculturation.
SOCIALIZATION

• is the process through which people are taught

to be proficient members of a society.

Interacting with friends and family, being told to obey rules, being
rewarded for doing chores, and being taught how to behave in
public places are all examples of socialization that enable a
person to function within his or her culture.
MAIN GOALS OF SOCIALIZATION
 An individual learns to become a member of society. This
results to a group to have acquired a new member and
thus sustains that group.
 Teaches individuals to control his or her impulse and to
develop a conscience.
 Teaches an individual how to prepare certain social roles.
 (e.g. occupational roles, gender roles, institutional roles,
etc.)
 Instills to members what behavior are expected of them:
a form of social control.
We can distinguish three major aspects of
socialization:

•The context in which it occurs.

•The actual content and processes people use to

socialize others.

•The results arising from those contexts and

processes.
