PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

It refers to the practice of regularly

servicing equipment on a predetermined
schedule so that it does not develop
catastrophic failures and performs better
over its useful life cycle.
Why is it important to perform
preventive maintenance?
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Proper care and preventive

maintenance are performed so that the
tools increase durability, increase
efficiency, reduce cost of replacement,
ensure worker’s safety and avoid
damage to the tools.

tools, and equipment we can use in
cleaning agricultural tools?

Effective Maintenance of Farm
Tools and Equipment
Effective Maintenance of Farm Tools and Equipment
A. Cleaned tools last longer.
B. Sharpen your tool before and after use.
C. Apply oil or grease metal parts.
D. Remove rust with a sandpaper, wire brush and
electric drill with a wire brush attached.
E. Make sure wooden handles tools are strong and
durable.
F. Hang the tools of your garden.
A. Cleaned tools last longer:
Tools should be cleaned after using.
• Remove caked soil from hoes, shovels and spades. It may be
necessary to use a forceful spray of water, a stiff brush, and
soapy water. Tools that come into contact with soil should be
wash with water after each use.
• Dry it with a cotton rag before putting it away.
• Tools that don’t come in contact with soil, particularly those
with sharpened edges like axes, pruning shears, and knives,
should be wiped down with a thick, rough cotton cloth to
remove any gums and saps from their blades.
B. Sharpen your tool before and after use.
When you sharpen tools, it decreases the amount of force
you need to use to accomplish the operation. Your work
will go faster and easier. Blunt tools can break when they
are used.
Some tools like shovels, axes, hoes, and trowels are best
sharpened with a hand file, while other tools like pruning
shears and knives call for a whetstone. Depending on how
dull an edge is, some tools may require a session with a
high-speed grinding stone.
ACTIVITY
Arrange the steps in sharpening tools using mile file:
2
_______ Hold the file at a slight angle over the original
beveled edge, which is the top or front side of shovels and
spades.
4
_______ After the edge has been sharpened, turn the tool
over and lightly file the back of the blade to remove the thin
"burr" that formed when the front side was filed.
3
_______ In a sweeping motion from one side to the other,
push the file along the edge in a one-way stroke away from
the blade.
1
_______ For best results, hold the tool steady in a clamp, vise,
or other bracing system.
Steps in Sharpening Tools using Mile File
1. For best results, hold the tool steady in a clamp, vise, or
other bracing system.
2. Hold the file at a slight angle over the original beveled
edge, which is the top or front side of shovels and spades.
3. In a sweeping motion from one side to the other, push
the file along the edge in a one-way stroke away from the

5 Test the sharpness.
_____
3 Begin grinding the blades.
_____
2 Examine the sharpness to determine the correct
_____
sharpening angle.
Steps in Sharpening Tools using Whetstone
1. Clean the blade with a stiff brush and soapy water to
remove any rust, clumped dirt or other debris.
2. Examine the sharpness to determine the correct
sharpening angle.
3. Begin grinding the blades.
4. Smooth the edges.
5. Test the sharpness.
6. Add a coat of oil.
C. Apply oil or grease metal parts.

Using a clean rag, apply lubricating oil to both the

wooden handle and the metal blade. Rub the oil into
the surface then wipe off any excess. The oil will help
prevent rust and condition the wood to keep it from
absorbing water and prevent cracking. Oiling of the
movable parts makes the device simple to work
with. It also increases the performance of the tool or
equipment.
D. Remove rust with a sandpaper, wire brush and
electric drill with a wire brush attached.
Extremely rusty tools require special attention. Use a
sheet of 80-grit sandpaper to remove light coatings of
rust.
To remove a layer of rust, a stiff wire brush can be
effective.
But, when rust is very heavy, like the texture of medium-
grit sandpaper, a heavy-handed approach is needed.
On badly pitted steel surfaces like those on tools you find
at yard sales, the quickest and most sensible option is an
electric drill with a wire brush attachment.
E. Wooden handles should be strong.
Make sure wooden handles tools are strong
and durable. If there is any defect, replace it.
F. Hang the tools of your garden.
Keep your tools hang. Leaving them on the floor can cause
rusts as they may come into contact with moisture.
Leaving tools on the floor may cause injury to persons who
step on the floor. Once stepped upon, they may break or
deformed making them unfit for work.
Tools should be stored properly.
Pointers to follow in storing tools and equipment:
1. Have a designated place for each kind of tool.
2. Label the storage cabinet or place correctly for
immediate finding.
3. Store them near the point of use.
4. Wash and dry properly before storing.
5. Store knives properly when not in use with sharp edge
down.
6. Put frequently used items in conveniently accessible
locations.
Tools should be stored properly.
Pointers to follow in storing tools and equipment:

7. Gather and secure electrical cords to prevent

entanglement or snagging.
8. Cutting boards should be stored vertically to avoid
moisture collection.
9. Metal equipment can be stacked on one another after
drying such as storage
10. Make sure the areas where you are storing the
equipment are clean, dry and not overcrowded.
Tools should be stored properly.
Pointers to follow in storing tools and equipment:

Dry Tools after Use

After using tools or equipment, clean and make sure they
are dried before packing or hanging them. This will
prevent them from rusting.

II. PERFORMANCE TASK: Directions: Conduct a practical test in
your house. Do the following procedures in performing maintenance for
your tools. Document your performance with video for each step. Your
performance will be rated according to the rubrics.
Step 1. Get any tool that came in contact with soil.
Step 2. Clean them with the use of a forceful spray of water, a
stiff brush, and soapy water.
Step 3. Sharpen your tool, if necessary. (Ask assistance from
adult.)
Step 4 .Using a clean rag, apply lubricating oil to both the
wooden handle and the metal blade. Rub the oil into the
surface then wipe off any excess.
Step 5. Keep it in a clean storage.
