Ladder Safety

Use the correct ladder for the job.

• A-frame ladders used in the open and locked position.
• Extension ladders leaned against a structure.
• Non-conductive ladder near electrical equipment.

Inspect the ladder before each use.

Only one person should climb at a time.

Only trained personnel shall use ladders.

Maintain three points of contact while ascending, descending, and/or working on a ladder.

When climbing down a ladder, look before you step off a ladder to obtain a sure, safe
footing, and avoid using the top two steps.

Use the correct angle, supports, treads, cross brace, and rails.
• Keep ladders free from slipping hazards and place on firm level surface.
• Use cross bracing on the rear of a step ladder for climbing only if it is designed for that purpose.

Mark defective ladders and remove from service.
