SAFETY TOOL BOX TALK

Use of Ladders
• Ladders must be stored correctly and inspected regularly.
• Check for splits, cracks or faults in the stiles and/or rungs.
• Don’t use painted ladders, this can hide damaged parts.
• Report defects to your supervisor
• Only use a ladder when the job is light and of short duration and if it safe to do
so.
• Use a firm base and set at the correct angle (one out to four up).
• Ladders must be tied near top and extend safe distance above landing stage
(at least 1.0 meter).
• If it can’t be secured at the top, ‘foot’ it at the bottom. ‘Tread in’ if possible
• Clean your boots before you use the ladder.
• Use both hands on stiles, up and down. Always face the ladder.
• Don’t overreach sideways from a ladder, always move it.
• If using extension ladders, each section must overlap by
2 rungs – for ladders up to 5 metres (closed length)
3 rungs – for ladders 5 – 6 metres (closed length)
4 rungs – for ladders over 6 metres (closed length)
• Don’t stand ladder on drum, box, bricks or other unstable base.
• Never attempt to repair broken ladders; return it to store or cut them or bin them
if given authorization.
• Never carry loads up ladders – hoist it up or use stairs.
• Ladder rungs must not be used to make a secondary platform.
• When using metal, make sure there are no electrical hazards in the near
vicinity.
• Use the right length ladder for the job. Never lash two short ladders to make it
longer.

REMEMBER:
THE VAST MAJORITY OF LADDER ACCIDENTS OCCUR BECAUSE THE
LADDER IS NOT TIED OR FOOTED
