RADIOACTIVE
WASTE
BY: VHENZ IVAN MONDRES BSEE 2-A
RADIOACTIVE WASTE IS PRODUCED
AS A BYPRODUCT OF VARIOUS
HUMAN ACTIVITIES INVOLVING
RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS, SUCH AS
NUCLEAR POWER GENERATION,
MEDICAL TREATMENTS, INDUSTRIAL
PROCESSES, AND SCIENTIFIC
RESEARCH.
RADIOACTIVE WASTE IS ANY
LIQUID, GAS OR SOLID THAT
CONTAINS A RADIOACTIVE
NUCLEAR SUBSTANCE AND FOR
WHICH THERE IS NO FORESEEABLE
USE.
3 CATEGORIES OF RADIOACTIVE
WASTE
 Low-Level Waste (LLW)
 Intermediate-Level Waste (ILW)
 High-Level Waste (HLW)

Why we need to be careful in radioactive waste?

Exposure to ionizing radiation can

damage living tissues and increase the
risk of cancer, genetic mutations, and
other health problems.

Some radioactive isotopes have long half-

lives, meaning they remain radioactive for
extended periods.

Improper disposal or accidents involving

radioactive waste can lead to
contamination of soil, water, and air. This
contamination can persist for thousands
of years, impacting ecosystems and
wildlife. 9

Fukishima, Japan

The water overwhelmed the

defensive sea wall, flooding
the plant and knocking out
the emergency generators.
Workers rushed to restore
power, but in the days that
followed the nuclear fuel in
three of the reactors
overheated and partly melted
the cores - something known
as a nuclear meltdown.

12
Chernobyl, Ukraine

On April 26, 1986, a sudden surge of

power during a reactor systems test
destroyed Unit 4 of the nuclear power
station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the
former Soviet Union. The accident
and the fire that followed released
massive amounts of radioactive
