Six significant modes of documentaries: poetic, observational, expository, reflexive, participatory, and performative.
1. Poetic mode documentaries focus on creating a mood or tone through the use of visuals, sound, and editing, rather than
adhering to a linear narrative. Example: “An Insignificant Man” this documentary follows the journey of Arvind Kejriwal,
directed by Khushboo Ranka and Vinay Shukla released in 2016.
2. Observational mode documentaries aim to capture reality as unbiased as possible. " लाम्बी सफर" is an observational
documentary that follows the lives of nomadic tribes in the Himalayan region of India.
3. The Expository mode is a more traditional documentary approach, featuring a clear narrative structure and providing a
strong argument or perspective throughout the film. "सूरज: हमारे जीवन का उजाला” explores the science and significance of the Sun
in our solar system and its impact on life on Earth.
4. In a Reflexive mode documentaries, the filmmaker is not just an observer but an active participant in the process. These
documentaries shine a spotlight on the process of making a documentary itself. Jashn-e-Azadi is a notable reflexive
documentary in Hindi.
5. Participatory mode documentaries involve the filmmaker interacting with the subjects, often through interviews or direct
engagement in the events being documented.
6. Performative mode documentaries focuses on the filmmaker’s personal experience and emotional engagement with the
subject matter, blurring the line between fact and fiction in the process. "India's Daughter" (2015): Directed by Leslee
Udwin, this documentary explores the 2012 Delhi gang rape case and features interviews with the convicts.
