Alcohol:
While alcohol consumption is legal for non-Muslims in Pakistan,
it is restricted and controlled. However, issues related to alcohol
abuse do exist, and some individuals may engage in illicit
alcohol consumption.
How drugs affect your body
Drugs can have various effects on the body, and these effects can differ depending on
the type of drug, the dosage, the method of administration, and the individual's overall
health. Here are some general ways in which drugs can affect the body:
Central Nervous System (CNS) Effects: Many drugs act on the central nervous
system, altering brain function and affecting cognition, mood, and behavior. For
example, stimulant drugs like cocaine and amphetamines can increase alertness and
energy, while depressant drugs like alcohol and opioids can slow down brain activity,
leading to sedation and relaxation.
Physical Health Effects: Drugs can impact physical health in various ways. For
instance, long-term use of certain drugs, such as tobacco and alcohol, can lead to
chronic health conditions like heart disease, liver damage, and respiratory problems.
Additionally, drug use can impair immune function, making individuals more
susceptible to infections and illnesses.
Addiction and Dependence: Many drugs have the potential to cause addiction and
dependence. Addiction is characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and use despite
harmful consequences, while dependence involves the development of tolerance and
withdrawal symptoms when drug use is reduced or stopped. These conditions can
have profound effects on an individual's life, relationships, and overall well-being.
Mental Health Effects: Drug use can impact mental health, leading to symptoms
such as anxiety, depression, paranoia, and psychosis. Some drugs can exacerbate pre-
existing mental health conditions or trigger the onset of mental illness in susceptible
individuals.
Cardiovascular Effects: Certain drugs can affect the cardiovascular system, leading
to increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and changes in blood flow. For
example, stimulant drugs like cocaine can constrict blood vessels and strain the heart,
increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Respiratory Effects: Inhalation of certain drugs, such as tobacco smoke and certain
illicit substances, can damage the respiratory system, leading to conditions like
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer.
Gastrointestinal Effects: Some drugs can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading
to issues such as nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Chronic use of
certain drugs can also contribute to digestive disorders and liver damage.
Cognitive Impairment: Prolonged drug use can impair cognitive function, affecting
memory, attention, and decision-making abilities. This can impact an individual's
academic or occupational performance and overall quality of life.
