Factoring Polynomials with

common monomial factor
Mr. Jerry A. Espineda,LPT
Polynomials…
•Is an algebraic expression
that represents a sum of one or
more terms
containing whole number
exponents on the
variables.
Polynomials…
Here are the examples of
polynomials:
Classification of Polynomials based on the number of terms

Monomial-a polynomial
with one term.
Example:
Classification of Polynomials based on the number of terms

Binomial-a polynomial
with two term.
Example: +5x
Classification of Polynomials based on the number of terms

Trinomial - a polynomial
with three term.
Example: +5x+1
Classification of Polynomials based on the Degree

Degree of a monomial in one

variable – the number of times
that the variable occurs as a
factor in the monomial.
Example:
is the degree of 2 in a, 1 in b
Classification of Polynomials based on the Degree

Degree of a monomial in one

variable – is the total number of
times the variable occurs as
factors.
Example:
The degree is 2+1=3.
Classification of Polynomials based on the Degree

Degree of a monomial in one

variable
Example:
The degree of v is 1, w is 2 and x
is 4. The degree of a given
monomial is 1+2+4=7
Classification of Polynomials based on the Degree

Degree of a polynomial– is the greatest

of the degrees of its terms.
Example:
is 4 thus the degree of =4 because it is
the highest degree.

Writing a polynomial
in one variable
Conventional way to write it is in descending
(Decreasing) degrees. The first term is what
we called the leading coefficient. It is also
convenient to write the polynomial in
ascending order where in we must start on
the lowest exponent up to the biggest
exponent.

Factoring polynomial
with common
monomial
-refers to a rewriting a polynomial
as a product of polynomials of
smaller degree
Factoring
Example #1:
Step 1: Express each term as factors
x(x)+x(2)
Step 2: Find the greatest common factor (GCF)
GCF = x
Step 3: Divide each term by the GCF.
= x+2
Step 4: Write the GCF and the result from step 3 together.
x(x+2) <-final answer
Factoring
Example #2: 3
Step 1: Express each term as factors
3(x)+3(2)
Step 2: Find the greatest common factor (GCF)
GCF = 3
Step 3: Divide each term by the GCF.
= x+2
Step 4: Write the GCF and the result from step 3
together.
3(x+2) <-final answer
