Introduction
Cristóvão de Figueiredo was a Portuguese renaissance
painter from the first half of the 16th century
Biography
• His full name is Cristóvão de Figueiredo;
• He was born in 1500-1503;
• Born : in Portugal
• He died in 1543;
• Father´s name: King D. Manuel I
• Brother: D. João III
• Sister-in-law: Isabel Pires ( who was married with
João de Buão, a famous French architech)
Personal life
• Graduated in Jorge Afonso School in Lisbon;
• He started painting in 1515 and was a very good artist;
• Son of D. Manuel I who was married to Ana Pires
( daughter of Pedro Anes)
• He lived in Lisbon, Mangaland street;
• In 1530 he went to Coimbra
• Later, in 1533 to 1534 went to Lamego;
• He return to Lisbon;
Professional life
• Worked for King João III;
• Worked for the Lisbon Court of Appeal ;
• Signed a contract with Friar Franciso de Vila-Viçosa to
make three altarpieces;
• Brought an unusual opulence to Portuguese painting ;
• A lot of his paintings are now in National Museum of
Ancient Art in Lisbon and in the Machado de Castro
Museum in Coimbra;
