Christ the
Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer is a
famous statue of Jesus Christ
located in Rio de Janeiro, on
Corcovado Hill. It is a symbol
of Christianity in Brazil that
represents peace and love,
with Jesus with open arms.
Per day, Christ the Redeemer
receives, on average, 5,000
visitors.
The monument is 38 meters
high, with the statue 30
meters and the pedestal 8
meters.
• Along with Pão de Açúcar
(Sugarloaf Mountain),
Christ the Redeemer is
one of the best-known
turistic points that
distinguishes not only Rio
de Janeiro, but also Brazil.
• In 2007 it was elected as
one of the new 7 Wonders
of the Modern World.
• Christ the Redeemer was
inaugurated on October
12, 1931, the feast of
Nossa Senhora Aparecida
(Our Lady of Aparecida).
• The statue's hands and head
were worked by the Polish-
French sculptor Paul
Landowski and the head was
mostly worked by the
Romanian sculptor
Gheorghe Leonida. 
• In 1859, the priest Pierre-Marie Boss
was at the window of the Church
Imaculada Conceição, located on
Botafogo beach and, seeing Corcovado
Mount, had the idea of building a
monument in honor of Princess Isabel,
daughter of Emperor Pedro II.

• During the preparations for the

centenary of the Independence of
Brazil, in 1920, the Círculo Católico of
Rio de Janeiro made the proposal and
raised funds for the construction of the
monument.
• To compose Christ the Redeemer,
thousands of soapstone triangles
were carved, which were later
glued to a fabric and applied to
the statue.
• The monument is made of
reinforced concrete and
soapstone. This stone that exists
in large quantities in Brazil, in
addition to being beautiful, has
high resistance to erosion.
• There is a heart on Christ
the Redeemer, which
measures 1.30. In this
heart, on the inside of the
sculpture, there is a glass
bottle with a parchment
that contains the family
tree of tax engineer Pedro
Fernandes and master
builder Heitor Levy.
