    Waves are disturbances that transfer energy through a medium without transferring matter. They are caused by the vibration of particles in the medium and come in two main types: transverse waves, where particles move up and down perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer; and compression waves, where particles move back and forth parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Key features of waves include crests, the highest or most compressed point, and troughs, the lowest or most spread-out point. After a wave passes through a medium, the particles end up in roughly the same positions they started in.
