Molecular Geometry Basics

This document discusses molecular geometry and the valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory, which predicts the three-dimensional shape of molecules based on the number of electron pairs around the central atom. VSEPR theory states that electron pairs around an atom will adopt an arrangement that minimizes repulsion between the pairs. The theory is used to understand why different molecules have varying shapes and bond angles based on the number of atoms in the molecule and how the electron pairs are arranged.

Molecular Geometry

 [Link] the shape of molecule

 [Link] angles in different molecules
 [Link] theory to understand on why
molecules have different shapes and different
bond angles
What is VSEPR Theory?

 The valence shell electron pair repulsion

(VSEPR) theory is a model used to predict
3-D molecular geometry based on the
number of valence shell electron bond
pairs among the atoms in a molecule or ion.
Electron-Electron Repulsion

 When an atom approaches another atom, the negatively

charged electrons of the two atoms repel each other.

So, the size and boundaries of an atom are

determined by electron repelling each other.
That same principle also determines the shape of
a molecule.
