Purpose of
Toxoid Vaccine
Toxoids in the form of antigens, are
used in toxoid vaccines to elicit an
immune response and guard against
illnesses brought on by toxins
generated by specific bacteria. Since
the toxoid is a weakened form of the
original toxin, it cannot cause any
toxicity or toxin-induced disease,
but it does allow the body to
preserve immunogenicity to the
original toxin.
Purpose of
Toxoid Vaccine
Definition of Terms
Antigens: refers to any substance
that triggers an immune response.
Immunogenicity: ability to produce
an immune response.
Toxin: any substance poisonous to
organisms; produced by bacteria.
Toxoid: a no longer-active bacterial
poison (toxin) with the ability to
combine with or stimulate the
production of antibodies.
Purpose of
Toxoid Vaccine
Key Difference of Toxoid Vaccines
from other Types of Vaccine
1. Vaccines introduce a weakened or
inactivated form of a pathogen to the
body, stimulating an immune response,
while toxoids contain inactivated
bacterial toxins that trigger immunity
against the toxin.
2. Toxoids specifically target illnesses
brought on by bacteria that produce
toxins, whereas vaccines guard against
bacterial and viral infections.
How are Toxoid
Vaccines Made?
The process of
purifying bacterial toxins
generates toxoid
vaccinations. To produce
toxoids, formaldehyde or
heat are used to suppress or
inactivate the toxicity of pure
exotoxins while also
preserving its
immunogenicity.
How are Toxoid
Vaccines Made?
However, strict regulation of
the processes used in the
manufacturing of
toxoid vaccines is necessary
to achieve
detoxification/inactivation
without significantly altering
the structure of the antigenic
epitope.
How are Toxoid
Vaccines Made?
This method is only
applicable to illnesses where
the primary cause of the
sickness is toxins secreted.
These toxins are used in
vaccinations and have been
"detoxified," making them
safe and harmless.

Tetanus Toxoid
Tetanus toxoid (TT), often known as

Examples of tetanus vaccine, is a toxoid

vaccination used to prevent tetanus.
Tetanus is a bacterial infection caused

Toxoid Vaccines
by Clostridium tetani which induces
nervous system damage. This
produces jaw and neck muscle
spasms.
Tetanus Toxoid
Five doses of tetanus toxoid are

Examples of advised during childhood, with a sixth

administered during
adolescence. Common side effects

Toxoid Vaccines
are redness and pain at the site of
injection while others are rarely
reported to have fever, feeling tired,
minor muscle pain, and severe
allergic reaction.
Diphtheria Toxoid Toxin-producing
Corynebacterium diphtheriae
bacteria are the source of the
Examples of dangerous infection known as
diphtheria. It may result in
breathing difficulties,
Toxoid Vaccines irregular heartbeats, or even
death. Vaccines containing
diphtheria toxoid are
administered intramuscularly.
Diphtheria Toxoid Diphtheria toxoid is also
combined with both tetanus
toxoid and acellular pertussis

Examples of vaccine as DTaP (Infanrix and

Daptacel) or Tdap (Boostrix and
Adacel) vaccines. DTaP

Toxoid Vaccines
(diphtheria, tetanus toxoids, and
acellular pertussis vaccine) is
recommended for children age 6
weeks through 6 years. DTaP
vaccine may cause local reactions,
such as pain, redness, or swelling.
BENEFITS
01 Effectivity 02 Stability
- Toxoid vaccines are especially good at - Compared to other vaccines, toxoid
preventing certain toxin-mediated diseases vaccines are more stable and less susceptible

Booster shots are typically recommended or light. It does not contain pathogen, so it is
every 10 years or so. safe for people with weak immune systems.
