My Health Care Plan

1. EXPLORATION
1. Exploration
MANUFACTURING OF SULFURIC ACID BY
CONTACT PROCESS
1. Production of Sulfur dioxide from sulfur.
Sulfur dioxide can be created by burning sulfur
S(s)+O₂(g) → SO₂(g)(1)
or by heating sulfide ores like pyrite.
4FeS₂(s)+11O₂(g) → 2Fe₂O₃(s)+8SO₂(g)(2)
1. Exploration
2. Purification of Sulfur Dioxide

The sulfur dioxide that was created is then

passed through purifying towers that
removes solid particles, dust particles,
traces of arsenic and also dries the gaseous
mixture.
1. Exploration
3. Catalytic Oxidation of Sulfur Dioxide to
Sulfur Trioxide
2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) > 2SO₃(g) + heat

This happens in the oxidation chamber where

the gaseous mixture together with
vanadium pentoxide is heated, thus,
forming sulfur trioxide.
1. Exploration
4. Conversion of Sulfur Trioxide to Oleum

SO₃+ H₂SO₄ H₂S₂O₇

Sulfur Trioxide is cooled and then is absorbed

by the sulfuric acid to give oleum.
1. Exploration
5. Dilution of Oleum to Sulfuric Acid

H₂S₂O₇ +H₂O  2H₂SO₄

In the diluting tank, oleum is diluted with

water to create sulfuric acid.
2. ASSESSMENT
2. Assessment
 Acute Inhalation of Sulfuric Acid / Single
Exposure
It can cause respiratory tract irritation, severe lung
damage, such as chemical pneumonia, fibrosis,
bronchiectasis, congestion and inflammation has been
reported following the inhalation of sulfuric acid mists.

Symptoms include intense coughing, rhinorrhoea,

difficulty in breathing and chest tightness
2. Assessment
 Chronic Inhalation of Sulfuric Acid /
Repeated Exposure
Inhalation can cause severe irritation of the lungs,
pulmonary oedema or accumulation of liquid in
the lungs. Bronchitis and changes in lung function
have been noted after long-term exposure to
sulphuric acid mists. Repeated exposure to lower
concentrations may lead to industrial bronchitis.
2. Assessment
Proper Disposal of Sulfuric acid
1. RECYCLING- Spent sulfuric acid can often be
reprocessed to obtain a product of virgin
quality.
2. NEUTRALIZATION - Sulfuric acid may also
be diluted and then neutralized. First, add
the acid slowly to a solution of soda ash and
slaked lime, and to then flush with a large
volume of water.
2. Assessment
3. LANDFILL – Sulfuric acid may be disposed
by being absorbed in vermiculite, dry sand,
or earth. Environmental regulatory agencies
should be consulted for acceptable disposal
practices.
4. SEWAGE TREATMENT – Sulfuric acid is the
most commonly used acid to bring the pH
level of wastewater back to normal and it is
also soluble to water.
3. MY ACTION PLAN
3. My Action Plan
EXPOSURE TO SULFURIC ACID MISTS
THROUGH INHALATION

 It can cause respiratory tract irritation,

severe lung damage, congestion,
inflammation, intense coughing,
rhinorrhoea, difficulty in breathing and
chest tightness.
3. My Action Plan
Information dissemination should be
conducted to educate the community
people on first aid measures, proper
handling and storage, PPE to be used and
the uses of sulfuric acid.

A. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Sulfuric acid (2H₂SO₄) is a very corrosive liquid.
3. My Action Plan
PRECAUTIONARY
B. LABELING MEASURE

In case of inhalation:
Call for a paramedic
or physician

Corrosive Very Toxic

HAZARD STATEMENT :
HAZARD PICTOGRAMS VERY TOXIC ONCE
INHALED
3. My Action Plan
C. FIRST AID MEASURES
Seek fresh air and medical attention
immediately. Keep at rest in a
position comfortable for breathing. If
breathing is difficult, trained
personnel should administer
emergency oxygen. Transfer the
patient to a hospital.
3. My Action Plan
D. Proper Handling and Storage
Handling
Immediately report leaks, spills or failures of
the safety equipment (e.g. ventilation
system). Prevent accidental contact with
incompatible chemicals. Never add water
to a corrosive. Always add corrosives
slowly to COLD water.
3. My Action Plan
Storage
Store in an area that is: cool, dry, out of
direct sunlight and away from heat and
ignition sources, separate from
incompatible materials.
Avoid bulk storage indoors. Regularly inspect
for physical changes or signs of
crystallization, damage or leaks.
3. My Action Plan
E. Personal Protective Equipment
Chemical Safety Boots Cover-alls
3. My Action Plan
Respirator or 3M Rubber Gloves
face
mask
3. My Action Plan
Chemical Safety Goggles
3. My Action Plan
E. Use of Sulfuric Acid
Sulfuric acid is used for a wide range of purposes both
industrially and domestically. Sulfuric acid is used in the
production of:
• Fertilizers
• Drain cleaners
• Detergents
• Synthetic resins
• Pharmaceuticals
• Batteries
