WHAT IS
BALLROOM DANCE?
Ballroom dance refers to a set of partner
dances, which are enjoyed both socially
and competitively around the world.
Derived from the word “ball” which
originates from the Latin word ballare
which means “to dance”
Two Styles of Ballroom Dancing:
1. Standard or 2. Latin American

BRIEF HISTORY OF

Centuries ago, ballroom dancing was
primarily for the privileged and well-to-do,
while the commoners had to make do with
folk dancing; however, these boundaries
have since disappeared, leaving ballroom
dancing a fun hobby for everyone.

It first appeared in the 16th century, Michel
de Montaigne, a Europe-French Philosopher,
wrote of a dance that he observed in 1580 in
Augsburg, Germany, where dancers moved
together so closely that their faces touched.

Waltz is an elegant, nearly universal
dance, perfect for weddings, or

Also referred to as the "Dance of
Love", is a passionate and dramatic

Tango music is usually written in 4/4
time (but also in 2/4 time)

FOXTROT
It is a smooth, elegant, easy-to-learn dance,
very popular at a wide variety of social
events, including wedding receptions. It's one
of the most beautiful ballroom dances
characterized by long, flowing movements.
The basic box step is also similar to waltz
steps – the main difference being timing
(foxtrot is 4/4, waltz is 3/4).

OTHER TYPES OF
BALLROOM DANCE
CHA-CHA
It is a lively, flirtatious ballroom dance full of
passion and energy.
It is danced to the music of the same name
introduced by Cuban composer and violinist
Enrique Jorrin in the early 1950s.
Cha cha music is composed in 4/4 time (four
beats to a bar of music).
JIVE
In the United States, “swing” became the
most common term for the dance, and the
term “jive” was adopted in the United
Kingdom.
Modern Jive is usually danced to music
with a 4/4 time signature
PASO DOBLE
“Paso Doble” may have been originated in
either France or Spain–the term “paso
doble” means “double step” or “two-step”
in Spanish
Fast-paced paso doble music originally
served as an introductory theme for
Spanish bullfighters entering the ring.

The rumba is danced with a basic
pattern of two quick side steps and a
slow forward step.
